  1. Lord of the Flies Literature CirclesChapters 4-7 Questions

  2. Discuss “Passions beat about Simon on the mountaintop with awful wings” (p 71). • Jack raged on the mountaintop about Ralph asserting his chieftainship, without knowing why. Write what Jack's inner voices may have been saying. • Outline and discuss three indications of rising tension in Ralph in these chapters. • Talk about the corpse in the copse. • Talk about clothes. What is happening to clothes on the island? How is the relationship to clothes mirrored in other social changes that emerge now, stealthily, in the novel? • Answer Ralph's question, "Why do you hate me?" • Describe Jack's arrogance, Ralph's tension and the other's boldness in the face of the thing that goes "plop". How does Golding take you inside Ralph's head through the skillful use of words as Ralph leaves the scene?
