  9. Blood Groups • Why is it important to match blood groups for donors and recipients? • Agglutination:the clumping of RBC’s • Antigens:surface molecules on RBC’s • Antibodies:proteins in the plasmathat attack “foreign” bodies

  10. ABO Blood Group • Based on the absence or presence of 2 major antigens on RBC surfaces: • Antigen A • Antigen B • The presence/absence of these antigens combines to form 4 blood types: • Type A = A antigens only (41%) • Type B = ??? (9%) • Type AB = ??? (3%) • Type O = ??? (47%)

  11. ABO Blood Group, continued….. • If you lack antigen A on your RBC’s, then you will have antibody A in your plasma.
