  2. 1.1 Characteristics of Living Organisms • “Biology” is the study of living organisms – easier to recognize than to define • Characteristics present in all living things • “living thing” = “Organism”; living organism is really redundant  • Hierarchy/ Organization • Emergent Properties • Cells • Chemical Instructions (DNA, enzymes, hormones) - - - related to structure and function • Metabolism • Energy Flows/ Matter Cycles • Homeostasis • Reproduction (growth, development, senescence) • Populations Evolve
