  1. Elementary Battle of the Books Vienna ES 2013-14

  2. Elementary Battle of the Books (EBOB) What is it? • A book competition developed by NCSLMA (NC School Library Media Assoc.) • Students read 5 books and become ‘experts’ on their books in order to compete in quiz bowl atmosphere

  3. How? • Interested students need to commit to read 5 books (from the EBOB list) and be ‘experts’ on their books • Once a student commits to our team, they need to come to as many practices as they can! If students miss more than 25% of practices, they are at risk of forfeiture.

  4. When? • Students will practice with EBOB teammates during lunch and after school (all EBOB students) • Most practices will be during lunchtime (led by Mrs. C-O). Once/twice per month after school (w/ other EBOB coaches and Mrs. C-O). • Vienna students will be grouped into teams of 6 to compete informally within the school • We will organize some head-to-head competitions between the Vienna teams, just to practice. • 12 ‘all stars’ to compete at a district level will be selected by all coaches is based on knowledge, confidence, enthusiasm, and commitment.

  5. Who? • For avid readers (or aspiring avid readers!) • 4th and 5th graders only • Committed students • Teams will be made up of 6 students • We will have as many Vienna ‘teams’ as committed students warrant • All students willing to participate/commit are welcome to join the team

  6. The Book List 2013-14

  7. What ? How? • Mrs. C-O, Mrs. Boone, Mrs. Reader, Mr. B & Mrs. Cowan will be writing practice questions • All questions are written in the ‘In what book…’ format • Example: In what book did mountain girls go to school? • Answer: Princess Academy, by Sharon Hale

  8. Dates/Permission • Decide asap if you want to participate. Talk with your parents, ask Mrs. C-O any questions. • If you cannot attend all practice sessions, but still want to compete and participate, this is very possible. See Mrs. C-O • Fill out attached and get it back to Mrs. C-O by October 1. • Mrs. C-O has multiple copies of each book will be available for checkout.

  9. Fees/Needs • If you stay committed and make a team at Vienna you will need the following: • Field trip permission • $$ towards t-shirts, bus transportation, etc. The library has limited funding
