  2. Strategic Planning Outcomes – Provost Perspective, Highlights (1 of 3) • We help solve problems. • Through our strategic planning effort, COSE and SCEE will be seen as the first-choice for Minnesota science- and technology-based businesses to help solve their problems. • We will be recognized for our ability to help Minnesota industries become more competitive in the global marketplace through our phenomenological and interdisciplinary approach to research and problem solving. • We are aligned with the needs of business, industry and the community. • COSE and SCEE will develop and expand programs that meet the current and future workforce needs of the public and private sector • We provide rigorous experiential learning opportunities for our students. • A hallmark of an SCSU education will be the opportunity and expectation that our students put their classroom learning into practice. 3. Strategic Planning Outcomes – Provost Perspective, Highlights (2 of 3) • We achieve exceptional job placement of our graduates in the knowledge-based economy. • Our planning work should consider mechanisms by which we ensure our graduates are exceptionally prepared, including listening to employers to gain an understanding of the competencies they must develop during their education at SCSU and beyond. • We transform science and math education in our primary, secondary schools and at SCSU. • As Chancellor Rosenstone articulated to the legislature, we must “partner with K-12 to strengthen the pipeline to ensure that students from all walks of life – young and old, rich and poor, black and white, immigrants and fourth generation Minnesotans – are college ready.” • Science Express and the new Technology/Engineering Express and Themed Trailers offer an opportunity to directly impact students in the K-12 system as we have never been able to in the past.

  4. Strategic Planning Outcomes – Provost Perspective, Highlights (3 of 3) • We create an environment for faculty to flourish in teaching, research and service. • Through our strategic planning work, we must identify the types of professional development, research and scholarship infrastructure and support, and targeted recruitment of new faculty that will provide not only an environment where our faculty can be successful but also the appropriate talent to align with our external partners and constituents.

  5. Possible Strategic Planning Questions – Provost • What are the specific opportunities to align faculty research interests and regional needs? What infrastructure needs exist to support this alignment (i.e. externships, innovation fund, summer fellowships, post-docs)? • How can we leverage the new Integrated Science, Engineering & Laboratory Facility (ISELF) to achieve our outcomes? • How do we include external perspectives, expertise and experience in program development? • As part of SCSU’s reorganization, the University identified a Center for Undergraduate Research. How can this center concept be used to enhance COSE faculty and staff research experience and activity? • What is the opportunity for partnerships with two-year schools and how will these partnerships help us achieve our goals? • How will you align the planning efforts in COSE and SCEE with SCSU’s Learning Commitments of Active Learning, Community Engagement, Globalization and Sustainability?
