  1. Christian Foundational Truths The Crossis The Provision Lesson 5

  2. The Provision • Everything in the universe points to the Savior. • every principle, • every promise, • every truth in the Word of God has value only as it relates to the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ. • This is why Colossians 1:18 says that the whole plan of God is summarized in one thing: that He have preeminence -- first place -- in everything Colossians 1:18 He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the first-born from the dead; so that He Himself might come to have first place in everything. (NAS)

  3. The Provision John 1:1-2 In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. (NAS) • The Word “was.” eijmiv (eimi) “to be.” in the imperfect tense it means continuous existence in the past. • The Word was “with” God. prov" (pros) “face to face.”

  4. The Provision • In the beginning • the Word existed • the Word had eternal existence in the past • the Word was face to face with God • the Word stands unique from God.

  5. The Provision And “the Word was God.” • “He was in the beginning with God.” ou|to" (houtos) “this unique person” This Word is not a force, This Word is not a power, This Word is not an emanation, THIS WORD IS A PERSON.

  6. The Provision John 1:3-5 All things came into being by Him and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not comprehend it. (NAS) John 1:10 He was in the world and the world was made through Him and the world did not know Him. (NAS) “Apart from Me, you can do nothing.” John 15:5 6

  7. The Provision “in Him was life.” • Bios refers strictly to the physical aspect of life. • Zoerefers to life in the absolute sense, life as God has it. • This is the word used for • quality of life, • value, • meaning. • In the Word there always was essence and quality of life, and the life “was the light of men.”

  8. The Provision John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. (NAS) • “Became” indicates a transition from eternal pre-existence to existence in time • The word “dwelt,” skhnovw (skenooo), means “to tabernacle.”

  9. The Provision • He who was OMNIPOTENT chose to subject Himself to the frailty of human flesh. • He who was OMNISCIENT chose to subject Himself to the limitation of human thought. • He who was OMNIPRESENT chose to confine Himself in the flesh to the limitation of time and space and matter.

  10. God Revealed John 1:18 18 No man has seen God at any time; the only begotten God, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained {Him.} (NAS) • The word translated “explain” in the New American Standard and “revealed” in the King James is ejxhgevomai (exegeomai) “to draw out in narrative; to unfold in teaching; to recount, declare, reveal.”

  11. God Revealed John 1:14 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. (NAS) • Every Old Testament appearance of God was the preincarnate Christ. • in some cases as “the angel of the Lord” • in some as “a man” • in some as simply the God of Israel, the Lord • At times He appeared in a form called “the glory of the Lord..” • He was the cloud and pillar of fire that led and defended the Jews throughout their wilderness wanderings • He was the luminous cloud which rested over the ark of the covenant, between the golden cherubs, in the holy of holies, in the tabernacle and later in the temple

  12. God Revealed • He submitted Himself to the will of the Father – • He taught the teachings of the Father – • He did that which was pleasing to the Father – • He sought the glory of the Father – John 6:38 38 "For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. (NAS) John 7:16 16 Jesus therefore answered them and said, "My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me. (NAS) John 8:50 50 "But I do not seek My glory; there is One who seeks and judges. (NAS) John 8:29 29 "And He who sent Me is with Me; He has not left Me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him." (NAS)

  13. The gospel Genesis 3:15 15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman and between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head and you shall bruise him on the heel." (NAS) Galatians 4:4 4 But when the fulness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, (NAS) eujaggevlion (euaggelion) “evangelize” “to proclaim good news” 1 Corinthians 15:1-2 1 Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. (NAS) paralambavnw (paralambano) “to take as one’s own.” i{sthmi (histemi) “to stand” swv/zw (soodzoo) “saved” “keep from harm”

  14. The gospel What is the most important thing to know about the Bible? • Christ died for our sins. • This was His substitutionary death. • He died the death we all deserve • He paid the penalty for every sin ever committed • Christ died according to the Scripture. • Christ’s death was according to the plan of God • Everything in the Old Testament points forward to the promised Messiah 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, (NAS)

  15. The gospel What is the most important thing to know about the Bible? • Christ was buried. • Why is it important that He was buried? Because He had to be truly dead. • The fact that Jesus was buried and was in the tomb for three days was crucial to the message. • Christ was raised from the dead. • The fact of Christ’s resurrection is the only basis for the Christian’s hope. • The result of the resurrection is every day.

  16. The gospel • Jesus Christ is the source of resurrection life to every believer. John 10:10-11 10 "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they might have life and might have {it} abundantly. 11 "I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. (NAS) Colossians 3:1-5 If then you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory. Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire and greed, which amounts to idolatry. (NAS) John 11:25-26 25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me shall live even if he dies, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?" (NAS) Ephesians 2:6 6 and raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly {places}, in Christ Jesus, (NAS) 1 John 5:11-12 11 And the witness is this, that God has given us eternal life and this life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. (NAS)

  17. The gospel Jesus Christ is to the believer the source of resurrection life Jesus Christ is the source of resurrection power. Matthew 28:18 18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. (NAS) Ephesians 1:19 19 and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. {These are} in accordance with the working of the strength of His might (NAS) Philippians 4:13 13 I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. (NAS) Romans 6:4 4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. (NAS) 17

  18. The gospel Jesus Christ is to the believer the source of resurrection life Jesus Christ is the source of resurrection power. The Gospel -- the good news – is the deaths, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Genesis 2:17 17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you shall surely die." (NAS) Romans 5:8 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (NAS) 2 Corinthians 5:17 17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, {he is} a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. (NASB) Romans 5:12 12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world and death through sin and so death spread to all men, because all sinned-- (NAS) 2 Corinthians 5:21 21 He made Him who knew no sin {to be} sin on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (NAS) Romans 6:23 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (NAS) 18

  19. Greek The perfect language in which to communicate absolute truth • Every Greek verb has a three-fold fix so the reader can know exactly what the verb means. tense voice mood

  20. Greek Tenses (5) • Each tense tells the reader two things about the action the verb is describing: the time of the action • The possible times are the kind of action. • The possible kinds are past present future punctiliar linear

  21. Greek Tenses (5) • Thepresent tense shows progressive action in the present time • The aorist tense shows action that takes place at a point in time • The perfect tense denotes an action completed in the past with emphasis on the existing results • The imperfect tense shows continuous action in the past • The future tense can show either continuous or completed action in the future Acts 1:6 6 And so when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, "Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?" (NAS) Matthew 7:7 7 "Ask and it shall be given to you; seek and you shall find; knock and it shall be opened to you. (NAS) Acts 16:31 31 And they said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus and you shall be saved, you and your household." (NAS) Ephesians 2:8 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, {it is} the gift of God; (NAS)

  22. Greek Voices (3) • The three Greek voices show the relationship of the subject to the action of the verb. • In the active voice, the subject produces the action. • In the passive voice, the subject receives the action. • In the middle voice the subject produces the action and participates in some way in the result of the action.

  23. Greek Mood • Mood shows the relationship of the action to reality from the viewpoint of the speaker. • The indicative mood expresses real action. • Subjunctive, the mood of possibility • Optative, the mood of wish and desire • Imperative, the mood of command • express three different kinds of POTENTIAL action.

  24. Greek 1 Corinthians 15:1-2 1 Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. (NAS) 24

  25. Greek – “IF” 1 Peter 4:16 “If anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not feel ashamed,” • The first-class condition means “IF and it is true.” • The second-class condition means “IF and it is not true.” • The third-class condition means “MAYBE it is true and MAYBE it is not.” • The fourth-class condition means “IF and I wish it were true, but it is probably not.” Matthew 4:3, “If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread,” Luke 7:39 . . . “If this man were a prophet He would know who and what sort of person this woman is,” . . . John 14:15, “if you love me, you will keep my commandments,”

  26. Greek 1 Corinthians 15:12-19 Now if Christ is preached, that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, not even Christ has been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also is vain. Moreover we are even found {to be} false witnesses of God, because we testified against God that He raised Christ, whom He did not raise, if in fact the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If we have hoped in Christ in this life only, we are of all men most to be pitied. (NASB)

  27. Christ Died On Wednesday

  28. What does Scripture Say? • There are three passages in Scripture that tell us Jesus was resurrected BY Sunday. Matthew 28:1 1 Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first {day} of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the grave. (NAS) Luke 24:1 1 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices which they had prepared. (NAS) John 20:1 1 Now on the first {day} of the week Mary Magdalene came early to the tomb, while it was still dark and saw the stone {already} taken away from the tomb. (NAS)

  29. Sunday 6:00 a.m. What does Scripture Say? • By Sunday morning, Jesus Christ was out of the grave. Here is the dividing line. • Sometime after Saturday but before the women arrived at the grave Sunday morning, Jesus Christ rose from the dead and left the tomb. Saturday

  30. What does Scripture Say? Matthew 12:38-40 38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered Him, saying, "Teacher, we want to see a sign from You." 39 But He answered and said to them, "An evil and adulterous generation craves for a sign; and {yet} no sign shall be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet; 40 for just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so shall the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. (NAS) • He had performed countless miracles right before their eyes. • The three days and three nights are not figurative days, but literal days. • One day and one night represents a 24-hour period, just as it does in Genesis. • Some have argued that this could refer to only a part of a day. • By making this statement Jesus has indicated a 72-hour period.

  31. Sunday 6:00 a.m. What does Scripture Say? Saturday

  32. What does Scripture Say? • Between His death and resurrection there must be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. • By the application of simple arithmetic, the time of Christ’s death is established by counting back three days and three nights. • In Scripture there are two timetables, Jewish and Gentile.

  33. What does Scripture Say? • Gentile Time: 1 Corinthians 15:4 and that He was buried and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, • Jewish Time: Matthew 12:40 for just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so shall the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

  38. Feast of Unleavened Bread • The Passover meal, which the Pharisees were so anxious to observe after having crucified Christ was the beginning of the seven-day feast of Unleavened Bread. • The first day of this feast was set aside as a special Sabbath. John 18:28 28 Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas into the Praetorium, and it was early; and they themselves did not enter into the Praetorium so that they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover. 40. Feast of Unleavened Bread • The word Passover is the term used to designate the Feast of Unleavened Bread which is an annual Jewish festival of seven days duration. • It began at sundown at the close of the 14th day of Nisan ( March-April ) which was the beginning of the 15th day of Nisan. • The first and last days of the Feast of Unleavened Bread were special Sabbath days • Sabbath Day:A day in the Jewish calendar during which no work is to be done.

  42. What does Scripture Say? John 19:32-34 32 So the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was crucified with Him; 33 but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. (NASB) Exodus 12:15-16 Seven days shall you eat unleavened bread; even the first day you shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day to the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel. And in the first day there shall be AN HOLY CONVOCATION [a Sabbath], and in the seventh day there shall be AN HOLY CONVOCATION [a Sabbath], to you; no manner of work shall be done in them [the two Sabbaths: the first and last days of the Feast of Unleavened Bread], save that which every man must eat, that only may be done by you. • The day of Jesus’ crucifixion is called the “preparation.” “Preparation” means “the eve of the Sabbath.” • In this case, the law would be more stringently enforced because the next day, beginning at sundown on the evening of Jesus’ crucifixion, was a high day [the Sabbath of the Feast of Unleavened Bread]. • “Crura fracta,” the custom of breaking the legs of the crucified, was the customary means of hastening death. Leviticus 23:5-7 In the fourteenth day of the first month [Nisan – March-April] at even is the Lord’s passover. And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the Lord: seven days you must eat unleavened bread. In the first day you shall have AN HOLY CONVOCATION [a Sabbath]: you shall do no servile work therein. John 19:31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation [the day before a Sabbath during which preparation was made for the Sabbath; the specific Sabbath in view is the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread], that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath day [specifically, the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread], (for that Sabbath was a high day) [the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread], besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

  45. Six Trials • The First Trial– John 18:12-14 • The people who brought Him to trial were the RELIGIOUS crowd: chief priests, scribes, Pharisees • Annas was not a judge, THEREFORE, THIS TRIAL WAS ILLEGAL • The Second Trial – Matthew 26:57-68 • Not one aspect of this trial conformed to Jewish law!!

  46. Six Trials • Jesus is fraudulently being accused of wrongdoing. • It's going to cost Him His life. • He opened not His mouth. • He cast His worries upon the Father. • He left them with the Father. • He was not upset. • He was not disturbed. • He quietly rested in the promises of God the Father. • Here is a marvelous truth for you and I as believers today.

  47. • The high priest is speaking to the Royal High Priest. • The high priest is standing in the presence of the Living God.

  48. Six Trials • To recall some of the illegal points regarding this trial: • It was held at night, contrary to Jewish jurisprudence. • There was no defense attorney. • The court sought false witnesses. • The court was prejudiced against Jesus. • There was violence in the court.

  49. Six Trials • The First Trial– John 18:12-14 • The Second Trial – Matthew 26:57-68 • The Third Trial – Luke 22:66-71 • The Fourth Trial – John 18:28-38 • The Jews could not enter this judgment hall because it was a Gentile building, and to enter such a building on a holy day would so defile them that they would not be able to eat the Passover. • These people are concerned about obedience to religious law while attempting to remove the Person represented by the lamb in the religious ritual they desire to keep. Tue. 6 pm X Last Supper Wed. 6 pm X Passover Thu.

  50. Six Trials • The kingdom of Jesus is IN this world, but not OF this world. • The kingdom of Jesus consists of regenerate people the kingdom of this world comprises unregenerate people. • The kingdom of Jesus fights with the sword of the Spirit the world fights with the sword of men.
