  4. (Packed Cell Volume (PCV The PCV test is used to measure the amount of cells in the blood; blood is made up of cells and plasma. The amount of cells in the blood is expressed as a percentage of the total volume of blood; for example, a PCV measurement of 50% means that there are 50 millilitres of cells per 100 millilitres of blood.

  5. (Packed Cell Volume (PCV

  6. (PCV) Range

  7. Causes of Abnormal (PCV) • Causes of low PCV : Anemia Vitamin or mineral deficiencies, Liver cirrhosis Bleeding episodes. • Causes of high PVC : Dehydration

  9. Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) Mean corpuscular volume (MCV) is the average volume of red cells in a specimen. To calculate the MCV, expressed in femtoliters (fl, or 10-15L), the following formula is used:

  10. (MCV) Range

  11. Causes of Abnormal (MCV) • Cases of high MCV : liver disease e.g. Cirrhosis .  Hypothyroidism . • Causes of low MCV : lead poisoning. Long-lasting kidney failure

  13. Red Blood Cell Count A red blood cell count is a blood test that doctor uses to find out how many red blood cells (RBCs) body have . It’s also known as an erythrocyte count.

  14. RBC Count Range

  15. Causes of Abnormal RBC Count • Cases of high RBC count : Cigarette smoking Congenital heart disease Dehydration • Causes of low RBC count : Anemia Bone marrow failure Erythropoietin deficiency, Leukemia

  17. Hemoglobin (HB) A hemoglobin test measures the amount of hemoglobin in blood. Hemoglobin is a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to body's organs and tissues and transports carbon dioxide from your organs and tissues back to lungs.

  18. (HB) Range

  19. Causes of Abnormal (HB) • Cases of high HB : Lung disease Dehydration Living at a high altitude Heavy smoking Burns • Causes of low HB: Iron deficiency Vitamin B-12 deficiency Folate deficiency Bleeding

  21. Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin (MCH) The mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), or "mean cell hemoglobin" (MCH), is the average mass of hemoglobin per red blood cell in a sample of blood. MCH calculation :

  22. (MCH) Range

  23. Causes of Abnormal (MCH) • Cases of high MCH : deficiency of B vitamins • Causes of low MCH: Iron deficiency anemia

  24. Outline Packed Cell Volume (PCV) Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) Red Blood Cell Count Hemoglobin (HB) Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin (MCH) • Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration (MCHC) References

  25. Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration (MCHC) The Mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, a measure of the concentration of hemoglobin in a given volume of packed red blood cells. MCHC calculation :

  26. (MCHC) Range

  27. Causes of (MCHC) • Cases of high MCHC : Deficiency of Vitamin B12 Deficiency of folic acid • Causes of low MCHC : Iron Deficiency Anemia Pernicious Anemia Hemolytic Anemia Aplastic Anemia
