At it is pinnacle Aztec culture had rich and complex mythological and religious traditions, as well as reaching remarkable architectural and artistic accomplishments.

  9. Gods manifested themselves concretely on earth when a statue or human impersonator, adorned with their insignia, became the god for the duration of a ritual. They had to be praised, cajoled, and given gifts, including human sacrifices, to repay them for their own sacrifices, remind them of their duties to humankind, and inspire reciprocal gifts. Offended gods sent diseases or other punishments.
