  1. The Christchurch Quake -Thinking about Community and Leadership

  2. The Devastating Quake • On Tuesday, February 22, 2011 a magnitude 6.3 earthquake hit Christchurch. The quake has claimed a number of lives and caused extensive damage to many homes and businesses. Although the casualty- stats sit in the mid-100s, and expected to rise still, the has been many examples of great leadership and community spirit…

  3. Great leaders Mayor- Bob Parker The mayor of Christchurch, Bob Parker, has shown outstanding leadership during this time of disaster. Citizens of Christchurch and all of NZ have said that he has been cool and calm, and has taken every measure to try and help his city. Prime Minister- John Key John Key grew up in Chch, and he naturally feels a strong connection to this city. This has been reflected in his support the city, and he has been doing everything in his power to help.

  4. What are these leaders saying/ doing?????? Bob Parker is… • Telling people to stay at home for their own safety • Getting together civil defence forces and other rescuers to help out • Reassuring people, and helping Chch get back on their feet John Key is… • Getting help from all over the world, and sending hundreds of professionals to Chch • Helping all of NZ to support them and setting up help sites

  5. Coming together as a Community All of NZ has been doing all they can to help Christchurch in their time of need. Within Christchurch people having been offering neighbours, friends and even strangers a place to stay. Out of Christchurch there has been HEAPS of help too. Otago University made 10,000 packed lunches for the student volunteers, with Invercargill sending some up too. There has been many moments of silence, fundraisers and people offering to house evacuees.

  6. The Importance of good Leadership and Community Spirit in times like this • These traits are so essential in time like this, to keep people’s spirits up. Leadership is a necessity, because in times of crisis people need someone to look to for guidance and support. Community spirit is also a real need so those who have been hit the worst can look to their community for help. The wider community of NZ is sure to help them get back on their feet.
