  3. Case Based Learning is Versatile! You can use this delivery method to cover many different types of subjects • Healthcare • Business • Finance • Information technology • Human resource management • Safety • Marketing • ………the list is endless

  4. Case Based Learning Goals • Create the need to know • Raise the level of critical thinking skills (application, synthesis, evaluation) • Promote deeper diagnosis • Connect theory to practice • Facilitate social learning • Activate students by creating a rich and ambiguous learning environment

Case Based Learning Procedure • Design a case study or use an existing one (http://hbsp.harvard.edu/list/casestartupkit) • Prepare your students, set class norms • Define presenting problem • Determine desired outcome • Set the stage for full class participation • Feedback through evaluation of strengths and weaknesses to each course of action

Case Based Learning Domains The learning domain addressed is cognitive (thinking) with the underlying theory that this strategy raises the level of critical thinking skills through application, synthesis and evaluation (Walker Center for Teaching and Learning, University of Tennessee). It could address the affective domain if delivering a lesson with an emotional base such as ethics.

  8. Case Based Learning Success • Students prepared in advance with key facts • Cases must be complete • Facilitator ensures full participation, no sub groups • Facilitator models professional thinking and action • Facilitator provides direction and feedback

  9. Case Based Learning Contexts • When your audience needs: • Cognitive lessons that require critical thinking • Concept understanding • Team building • To develop problem solving skills • Reflection on previous problems

  10. Case Based Learning Constraints • Difficult to produce validating assessment instruments • If introduced too early may not be effective as a learning tool (students must have some learned material as a base) • Must prepare students in advance • Must be prepared for variables
