  1. Department of Engineering Dr Abir Al-Tabbaa aa22@eng.cam.ac.uk Soil Mix Remediation Project (SMiRT) Development Laboratory treatability study Field trials • Development, construction and validation of novel soil mixing equipment capable of delivering both wet and dry binder • Quality assurance software system which will monitor variables such as binder pressure, injection quality and rate, impact depth, penetration and withdrawal rates will be designed and implemented • A range of conventional and novel binders as well as additives will be used • Extensive laboratory study will be performed to optimise the selection of the materials • A number of tests will be performed: strength, density, leachability, sorption and desorption and compressibility • Trials on a selected site with variable ground condition and contamination • Permeable reactive barrier will be performed • Hot spot treatment of contaminated ground as well as improvement of soft soil will be carried out • Both wet and dry binder delivery will be performed Kentish Minerals Field monitoring and testing Field samples testing Stakeholders meeting • Site trial samples will be tested for a range of properties • Variation between wet and dry binder, depth, different installation techniques, treatability study and field performance will be investigated • Long term performance will be assessed • Brainstorming and info-exchange workshops will be held and stakeholders issues will be addressed • Boreholes for groundwater monitoring • Coring of the hot-spot treatment and ground improvement sections • Treated blocks extruded for inspection purposes BURA Dissemination of results • Research and development findings will be disseminated with CLAI:RE and IPM-Net
