Construction Activity Intensity • 13 defined construction activity categories were ranked from a low of 1 to a high of 10 based on the intensity of playa disturbances • Main criteria used in the ranking were: • Size of the area disturbed • Number of equipment and personnel involved • Frequency, number of passes, and haulage distances involved

Typical Construction Activity – Drain Line Installation (7) • Dump trucks stock pile drain envelope materials (sand) along drain lines • Trencher (HYDRAMAXX 2600) excavates and installs drain while loader (Excavator- VOLVO 140) deposits sand through the chute of the trencher to backfill drain with envelope material • Excavator (CARTERPILLAR–D6) pushes native soil to complete drain backfill and ground preparation

Construction Impact Visualization Tool • Lakebed was divided into 10-acre grid cells • Grid cells intersected with the day’s construction activity polygons • Polygon with the highest Activity Intensity ranking within the grid cell for that day was earmarked as representing the most significant construction activity for the grid cell on that day

Mapping of Construction Activities • Type 1: Buffers of a given width around construction of roads and berms; installation of pipes and utilities. • Type 2: Polygons covering the irrigation block or other areas where multiple activities are taking place at the same day. • Type 3: Circles of a given radius around point activities like pump station, turnout facility and silt trap installation.

Typical Construction Activity – Access Road/Berm Construction (8) • Ground preparation - scrapping, excavating and leveling • Geo-textile lining where needed • Haulage trucks stockpile sand, stones and dirt • Excavators, graders, and scrappers level road in specified lifts of sand gravels and stones • Compactors compact each layer that is placed on the road

Summary • Construction activities between Jan 2000 and July 2005 on the Owens Lake were investigated • Daily construction activities were captured in the form of polygons on a GIS map at various locations • Polygons were ranked in terms of the intensity of disturbance associated with the construction activity • Information was combined with meteorological, sand motion, dust, and other environmental data from the lakebed to generate GIS analyses and movies showing meteorological and aerometric conditions in relation to construction activities on the lakebed
