The Code Kingdom “from the greatest sermon ever preached” A study of the Sermon on the Mount.
The Gospel Guardian Matthew 5:17-20
The pattern • “That it might be fulfilled” • 129 Old Testament references through entire gospel • The pattern of the gospel of Matthew is to point out the evidence that Jesus is the Messiah as prophesied in the Old Testament. This is exactly what Jesus is saying in 5:17.
The Purpose • The purpose of Jesus in relationship to the law and prophets. (5:17) • Not to destroy but to complete. • The purpose of the law and the prophets. (Galatians 3:23-26) • Served as a guardian to prepare for Christ.
The Point • The kingdom code for righteousness is total obedience to the heart of the law. • This kind of righteousness is only found through faith in Christ who fulfilled every point of the law and prophets. (Philippians 3:4-9) • No need to jockey for positions in the kingdom when entrance is at stake. (Matthew 18:1-4) • To obey and teach “these commandments” is to obey and teach Jesus!
The Point How did Jesus fulfill the Old Testament? • Messianic Predictions • Satisfied the demands (Hebrews 10:1-18) • Perfect obedience (Mathew 3:15, Galatians 4:4, Hebrews 4:15) • By Holy Spirit in His followers (Romans 8:2-4)
The Problem • The problem that Jesus was confronting was the teaching of the scribes and Pharisees. • That the purpose of the law was to show how to attain righteousness by obedience to the letter. They missed the forest for the trees. • The purpose of the law is to show the incapability of keeping the letter or the heart. And so the Gospel guardian reveals our great spiritual bankruptcy and need for a Rescuer.
The Problem • The problem that Jesus confronts in our day is the attitude of relativism. • All standards of knowledge, truth and morality are relative to cultural, societal, historical influence. It is an attitude dictated by individual ideas and feelings. It is a postmodern preoccupation with personal preferences.
What authority does the bible have in my life? • Where do I go with hard questions? • Am I living in disobedience to the plain teachings of the Bible? Why or why not? • Do I study the Scriptures? • The role of Scripture is to reveal our desperate need of Christ for salvation and sanctification. • The role of Scripture is profitable for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness. So that we might be equipped for every good work and bring glory to God!!! (II Timothy 3:16-17, Ephesians 2:10, Mathew 5:16.)
