  2. Industry Introduction • Industrial and warehouse facilities face increasingly complex challenges: an aging workforce, concerns for health and safety, volatile energy markets, and environmental mandates. • Lighting plays a crucial role in responding to these challenges.

  3. Project Description • Haldex conducted a thorough review of lighting alternatives to look for potential energy savings and to improve illumination. • At the end of this review, T5HO fluorescent lamps and remote occupancy sensing option were found to be a clear choice to replace existing 1000-watt/400-watts metal halide (MH) fixtures.

  4. About T5HO Technology

  5. In this graph T5 high output is compared to standard high intensity discharge (HID) metal halide. There is a comparative advantage between T5HO and MH technology. Technology Comparison

  6. Technology Comparison (cont.) • The chart below shows the difference between light output at the beginning of a lamp’s life (initial lumens) and when 40% of the lamp’s rated life is over, (design lumens). Fluorescent lamps have better lumens maintenance as the lamp ages, compared to metal halide.

  7. Overall Benefits Improving light is an an excellent example of source reduction Efficient Light Reduction of Energy ($) Reduction of Green House Gases Light Better Illumination Reduction of Hazardous Wastes

  8. Recommendation • Material substitution of light fixtures in which the more efficient fluorescent lights (T5HO) will be use in place of less efficient metal halide lamps.

  9. Case Study: Receiving / Inspection Evaluate current light Propose a more efficient light Implement • - Avg. light: 414 lux • - T. power: 7560 W • - P. density: 1.7 W/f2 • - Must be recycled • - Life: 12,000 hrs • - Avg. light: 557 lux • - T. power: 3720 W • - P. density: 0.8 W/f2 • Life: 20,000 hrs • - Save money ($) • - Improve lighting • - Reduce Wastes * These results were obtained using Visual software

  10. Simulation Current

  11. Simulation (cont.) Proposed

  12. Economic Analysis (Energy) * These results do not include savings due to sensors

  13. Overall Project: Impact Table

  14. Conclusion Great (P2) Opportunity Less green house gasses 25% more light ½ of the energy Less H. wastes

  15. Internship Experience • Advantages • Great opportunity to learn about industry. • Real application of engineering. • Excellent opportunity to meet new people and learn about them. • Environmental responsibility: Prevention is better than cure. • Disadvantages • When working on a big project it is sometimes hard to manage time constrains. • It was hard to find housing.
