The Basis For Our Plea, Psalm 51:1-2 Plea for forgiveness not based on: • Our own righteousness • Our faithfulness • Our own merit It is based on God’s lovingkindness and tender mercies. • Psalm 103:8-10 • Luke 18:9-14
Acknowledgement of sin, Psalm 51:3-4 Do not: • Try to hide it. • Minimize it. • Try to deflect blame. Acknowledge guilt and accept responsibility. 2 Samuel 12:13 So David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the LORD.”…
Know where we are and where God wants us, Psalm 51:5-6 • David uses hyperbole to emphasize his sinfulness, not saying he was born that way. • Romans 7:9 I was alive once without the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died. • Matthew 18:3 and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. • Ezekiel 18:20 The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself. • Truth and wisdom need to be as pervasive as the sin.
Pray for renewal and restoration, Psalm 51:7-12 DAVID DESIRED MORE THAN JUST FORGIVENESS Of SIN. He prays for forgiveness, asking God to: • purge him with hyssop - Ps 51:7 • wash him whiter than snow - Ps 51:7 • hide His face from his sins - Ps 51:9 • blot out all his iniquities - Ps 51:9
Pray for renewal and restoration, Psalm 51:7-12 But he also desired... • Joy and gladness - Ps 51:8 • A new heart, and renewal of a steadfast spirit - Ps 51:10 • Continuation of God's presence and Spirit - Ps 51:11
Resolve to offer grateful service, Psalm 51:13-17 DAVID RESOLVES... • To teach other sinners and transgressors - Ps 51:13 • To praise God for His righteousness in delivering him from sin - Ps 51:14-15 • Knowing that God delights in something more than animal sacrifices - Ps 51:16 • A broken spirit and contrite heart is what really pleases God - Ps 51:17 • Isaiah 66:1-2,57:15 This is indicative of true repentance. 2 Corinthians 7:10-11
Pray for God’s purposes, Psalm 51:18-19 DAVID OFFERED A PRAYER REGARDING GOD'S PURPOSES... • That God would fulfill His purpose for Zion - Ps 51:18 • That God would be pleased with Israel's sacrifices - Ps 51:19 • His confession of sin ends with a desire for that which pleases God. • Cf. Conclusion: As we confess our sin: • Appeal to God's mercy and lovingkindness • Acknowledge our sins to God • Understand where we are and where God wants us • Pray for renewal and restoration • Resolve to offer grateful service • Pray for God's purposes We will experience forgiveness and renewal! Psalm 32:1-5
