  1. Automotive Considerations for the HEW PAR • Date:20-Jan-2014 Authors: Igal Kotzer, General Motors

  2. Abstract • This submission suggests the introduction of automotive considerations into the HEW PAR Igal Kotzer, General Motors

  3. Introduction • Wireless LAN is becoming a leading standard in vehicular communications • Many vehicle models today have a built in WLAN communication • WLAN is present in virtually every consumer electronic device • Vehicle manufacturers adapt the vehicles to the changes in consumer electronics • WLAN is used in intra-vehicle infotainment systems • The number of vehicle models equipped with WLAN is constantly increasing Igal Kotzer, General Motors

  4. WLAN in the Automotive World • Wireless LAN can be used in the automotive world in 3 main scenarios: • Intra-vehicle communication – mainly for infotainment • Inter-vehicle communication – uses such as multimedia and mesh networking • Vehicle to infrastructure • Inter-vehicle and vehicle to infrastructure communication can be divided into two cases: • Urban – low speed • Highway – high speed / high relative speed of two vehicles heading towards each other Igal Kotzer, General Motors

  5. Automotive Opportunity in HEW • This new forming standard will shape the wireless LAN future years ahead • This is an opportunity to consider the automotive world during the standard formation Igal Kotzer, General Motors

  6. Proposed Addition to the PAR • Add to the dense indoor and pedestrian speed outdoor scenarios vehicular scenarios • Addition to section 5.2.b: • This amendment defines standardized modifications to both the 802.11 physical layers (PHY) and the 802.11 Medium Access Control Layer (MAC) that enable modes of operation capable of supporting at least two (2) times improvement in the average throughput per station (measured at the MAC data service access point) in dense indoor, andpedestrian-speed outdoor and vehicular deployment scenarios.
