  3. Mechanization • Drastically changed the social nature of the work place • Eliminated the “craftsmen” aspect of production • Established a social class between workers and bosses Definition: Using machines to do work formerly done by humans or animals

  4. Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919) • Made a fortune in the steel industry • Vertically integrated the steel industry • After selling the Carnegie Steel Company to J.P. Morgan he focused on philanthropy

  5. Women and Children in the Work Force • 1.9 million women working in 1870 became 5 million by 1900 • 1 of 5 children between 10 & 15 were working in 1900

  6. John D. Rockefeller (1839-1937) • Created the American petroleum industry with Standard Oil Company • Horizontally integrated the oil industry by creating a monopoly • Philanthropist as well
