    3. A History of Starting of the deaf education in America 1807 Mason Firtch Cogswell wanted to do something for his 2 years old daughter Alice. 1812 Survey was made. It showed there are 84 deaf people in Connecticut. April 13, 1815 Nine men met with Dr. Cogswell to take steps establishing a school. April 15, 1817 The school was named Connecticut Asylum at Hartford for the Instruction of Deaf and Dumb persons. Alice Cogswell was the first pupil. Gallaudet was the principal. Clerc was the teacher.

A History of Starting of the deaf education in America 1818 Contruction of the school was 17 acres purchase by Jared Scaborough at $8,600 1821 School moved to Asylum Hill remain there for 100 years First instance for Federal support for Special Education in the United States 1873 “Old Hartford” moved to West Hartford when school moved in 1921 April 18, 1953 Monument design by Francis Wadsworth – a figure of a girl based on Alice Cogswell to intent to represent all deaf children in America who received an education. Thanks to pioneering work done by Hartford.

    5. Thomas H. Gallaudet Born on 1787 – 1851in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Entered the University of Yale at age 14. Earned his master degree in 1810 Worked as a traveling salesman In 1812, he enrolled in a Theological Seminary and graduated in 1814 His goal was to serve as an itinerant preacher – eventually this was put aside when he met Alice Cogswell the 9 years old deaf deaughter of his neighbor Dr. Mason Cogswell
