Division of BiostatisticsAnnual Report for 2004 and 2005 October 6, 2006
Mission • Develop new statistical and bioinformatic methodologies, • Collaborate with researchers outside of Biostatistics, • Provide instruction in beginning and intermediate applied statistics and bioinformatics, • Provide statistical consulting and grant preparation assistance services.
Basics • Two subdivisions: Biostatistical Consulting Unit, Center for Bioinformatics and Molecular Biostatistics • 12 faculty • 7 staff • 10 courses
Productivity - Research • 29 methodological publications (2004+2005) • 134 collaborative publications (2004+2005) • 9 grants or contracts focusing on methodology active in 2005 • 96 grants as co-investigator or collaborator active in 2005 • Peter Bacchetti elected Fellow of the American Statistical Association in 2004.
Productivity - Teaching • Introductory courses (Biostat 183 and 187) enroll about 150 students per year. • Our intermediate sequence, Biostat 208-209, taught primarily to the ATCR and MCR students, now enrolls 50 students. • Vittinghoff, Glidden, Shiboski and McCulloch published a book for Biostat 208-209 (Springer, 2005). • New courses: BMI 209 – Statistical analysis of microarray data, Biostat 200 – Intro biostats for TICR and MCR students.
Productivity - Service • Biostatistical Consulting Unit (Peter Bacchetti, Director) • 332 brief consultations (2004+2005) • 284 paid projects (2004+2005) • Hired new Associate Director, Barbara Grimes, PhD • Grant development assistance • 130 grants (2004+2005)
Center for Bioinformatics and Molecular Biostatistics • New course: BMI 209 – Statistical analysis of microarray data, • New postdoctoral associate – Yuanyuan Xiao, PhD. More detailed report later in the year, from Mark Segal, Director.
Future Plans • Revitalized seminar series – Mitch Gail will be visiting in the Spring, • Co-sponsor a small workshop on adaptive trial design, • Revamp both services and teaching curriculum as CTSI develops.
