  2. Physical Traits • Pregnant • Was a pretty girl • Was once radiant with life • About 30 • But appears much older due to hard work

Personality • Dost not have a particularly assertive personality, nor a particularly submissive personality • Does not express her own opinions and desires • Almost bitter and pessimistic • Scrambles Walter’s eggs • Is irritated with Walter for his false desires • Appears to be rather conservative in contrast to Beneatha’s liberalism • Easily embarrassed • When George Murchison arrives during Beneatha and Walter’s African dance, Ruth is overly apologetic to George about their behavior

Personality – Cont’d • A static character • Remains almost unchanged throughout the play • Always supports her family • Contributes to dynamic characters’ (Walter & Beneatha) growth • Sacrificing • Decides to abort her child • Says she will work 20 hours a day when Mama loses hope by saying they cannot move • “I’ll work … I’ll work twenty hours a day in all the kitchens in Chicago… I’ll strap my baby on my back if I have to and scrub all the floors in America and wash all the sheets in America if I have to” (140). • Tries too hard to please others

Character Development • Walter Lee gives Travis a dollar • Ruth gets upset, because she knows it’s only going to worsen the family’s financial situation • Ruth is giving up her child • Discourages Walter’s dream • Changes her mind after talking to Lena • Starts supporting Walter • When Lena buys a house, she begins to sing with joy • Is crushed when Walter gambled away their money • Becomes hopeful and optimistic when the family finally moves out of the apartment

Dreams • To build a happy family • Fulfilled • The Youngers became optimistic and are determined to live a better life • To move out of the apartment • Fulfilled • Wants Walter to be a man • Fulfilled • Mama says, “He [Walter] finally come into his manhood today, didn’t he? Kind of like a rainbow after the rain” (151).
