What is hazard mitigation? “The effort to reduce loss of life and property by lessening the impact of disasters.” • Most effective when implemented under a comprehensive, long-term mitigation plan • Identify risks and vulnerabilities and develop long-term strategies for protecting people and property • Key to breaking the cycle of disaster damage, reconstruction, and repeated damage (…if implemented) • Help communities comply with the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 (eligible for certain pre- and post-disaster funds) (Source: fema.gov)
Community Risk Assessments • Identify and map natural hazards • Identify and map community assets • Residential and Commercial Development • Infrastructure* • Critical Facilities* • Other Sensitive Lands • Analyze Risk • Evaluate number and types of affected assets (Overlay Analysis) • Estimate potential losses to each community from each natural hazard • Potential losses will largely determine types of mitigation strategies for each community later in the process
CRITICAL FACILITIES and INFRASTRUCTURE • Schools • PSAP (Dispatch) • Churches • Police • Health Care • Emergency Care • Dams • Correctional Fac. • Broadband Fac. • Bridges • Airports • Heliports • Railroads • Streams • Roads • Electrical Lines • Natural Gas Lines

Next Steps (Mark Millett, Box Elder EM) • BRAG completes risk assessment/ analysis • BRAG calculates potential losses for each community (per natural hazard type) • Mitigation Strategies meeting in late summer/early fall (be prepared for another survey!!!)
