Expectations Curriculum Expectation: • describe the main structures and functions of municipal, provincial, and federal governments in Canada; By the end of this presentation, you should be able to: • Identify the head of Canada • Identify the type of Federal Government in Canada • Identify the name and role of the Governor General • Identify the name and role of the Prime Minister • Explain the purpose of the Cabinet • Identify the size and explain the purpose of the House of Commons • Identify the size and explain the purpose of the Senate • Identify the purpose of a Backbencher • Identify the leader and role of the Official Opposition • Identify the leader and political party of all major federal political parties • Identify the Member of Parliament for Angus (Simcoe – Grey)

Head of Canada Canada has a constitutional monarchy Role is mainly ceremonial therefore she does not have real power She is responsible for summoning parliament or provincial legislature to meet, appointing senators and calling elections Signs bills into law The Queen Queen Elizabeth II of England
