  2. Potluck dinner parties are not as popular in China—the host usually does all of the food preparation. The visitor may bring something as a token of appreciation though! The Chinese express gratitude for a gift with profuse thanks “你太客气了!” It is important to remember, though, that Chinese people do not open the gifts in front of guests because it makes you look greedy. It is taboo to give someone a clock as a present because the phrase “to give a clock” (送钟, sòngzhōng) is homophonous with the phrase “to attend someone’s burial” (送终, sòngzhōng) Culture highlights

  3. Shows the duration of an action. If the verb takes an object, then the verb must be repeated. If the verb is not accompanied by an object, you do not need to repeat the verb. Question for duration of time: 多场时间: duo changshijian S + V + (O +V +)(了) + Time Duration

  6. 小高想在上海住一年。 • 小高在上海住了一年。 • 昨天下雪下了二十分钟。 • 我每天在书店工作三个钟头。 • 她在中国学三年。 • 他在中国住了五年,可是不会说汉语。 S + V + (O +V+)(了) + Time Duration

  7. Same meaning as previous pattern, just placing the object in a different location. This time, use a 的 before the object Time still does not come before the verb 昨天下了二十分钟雪。 我上了四个星期的暑期班。 S + V + (了) + Time Duration+ 的+ O

  8. Describe or inquire about the time/place/manner/initiator of an action that we already know happened. The是 will come before the verb phrase, and the的 will come right at the end of the sentence. (你去过北京) Q: 你是跟谁一起去的? A: 我是跟我表姐一起去的。 Q: 你们是什么时候去的? A: 我们是上个夏天去的。 是。。。的

  9. Use the phrases below, assume your partner has done these things. • 去上海 • 看 “哈利波特七。” • 麻瓜,máguā, muggle • 吃中国饭 • 过电脑 • 学汉语 Make your own: 是。。。的

  10. 他还没回来。 我还在学习中文。 上午十一点了,他还在睡觉。 今天的功课我还没写好。 这个谈论的语法很难, 我还不懂。 还: still

  11. Two adjectives that are either both positive or both negative. 我的小狗又可爱又好玩儿。 今天晚上的功课又多又难。 我哥哥又聪明又用功。 又+ adjective 1 +又 + adjective 2
