  7. History of Mars • In 1877 Giovanni Schiaparelli an Italian astronomer was the first person to draw a map of mars. In 1910 the U.S. astronomer Percival Lowell made observations which he put in a book. It inspired science fiction writers to write books such as The Princess of Mars, God of Mars, etc. A famous movie called Total Recall starring Arnold Schwarzenegger captured lots of attention. Through 1960-1970 NASA launched the U.S. Mariner and the Viking mission.

  8. History of Earth • Earth formed about 4.54 billion years ago by accretion from the solar nebula. • Volcanic out gassing likely created the primordial atmosphere, but it contained almost no oxygen and would have been toxic to humans and most modern life.
