  2. SQ3R • SQ3R is a five step study-reading strategy which can greatly facilitate the active reading process. • SQ3R is an acronym for • Survey • Question • Read • Recite • Review

  3. Step One: Survey • Check the length of the reading selection. Break the chapter or passage into manageable reading units. • Look at the headings and subheadings to get an overview of the organization of the ideas. • Read the introduction and conclusion to determine the main points that will be discussed. • Look at the graphic aids.

  4. Step Two: Question • Set a purpose for reading by looking at the questions at the end of the chapter. • If the chapter does not supply questions, change each heading and subheading into question.

  5. Step Three: Read • Read to find the answer to the questions from the chapter or read to find the answer to the questions developed for each heading and subheading. • Read with a pen in hand and pace reading for adequate comprehension. • Mark the margins to indicate the answers to the questions. • After reading, highlight the important material in each section.

  6. Step Four: Recite • After reading each headed or subheaded section of the chapter, stop and recite aloud the information gleamed for the section. Specifically, recite the answer to the question posed for that section of the chapter.

  7. Step Five: Review • Review the information from the chapter immediately after reading the chapter. • Review daily (especially prior to bedtime) the marginal marks and highlighted material. • Review prior to a test over the material.
