  2. What is Expository Writing? • Writing that explains, describes, or gives information • Root of expository is “expose” • Factual—no opinions or emotion • Organized • Clear and concise • Usually written in the 3rd person

  3. What are some examples of expository writing? • Reports and essays • Newspaper and magazine articles • Instructions • Opinion pieces

  4. Expository Organizational Patterns • Description: describes a topic by listing features, characteristics, and examples • Cue words: For example & Characteristics are Bubble Map Circle Map

  5. Expository Organizational Patterns • Sequence:lists items or events in numerical, chronological, or logical order • Cue words: first, second, third, next, then finally Flow Map Timeline

  6. Expository Organizational Patterns • Compare/Contrast: explains how two or more things are alike and/or different • Cue words: different, in contrast, alike, same as, on the other hand Double Bubble Map Venn Diagram
