  1. Life in Hatchmere The curriculum we follow in hatchmere

  2. Development Matters in the Early years foundation stage • Development matters is the early years curriculum for children aged birth to the end of reception • The curriculum view’s the development of a child holistically and sets out a child’s progression across three prime areas and four specific areas – it’s understood that development in the prime areas allows for progression within the specific areas of development, demonstrating the holistic view of a child • In addition to the seventeen areas of development and learning, the curriculum also defines how children learn with in the reception classroom. These are understood to be ‘The Characteristics of Effective Learning’ and include: Playing and Exploring, Active Learning and Creating and Thinking Critically.

  3. Early Learning goals • As previously mentioned, the prime and specific areas are broken down into seventeen aspects of learning. Within each of these 17 areas there is an ‘Early Learning Goal’ • Through practitioners continued observations, assessments and planning for children’s individual needs we track the progress of all children in Hatchmere • In the final term of this school year, we will provide families with a profile of the children’s development; explaining children’s attainment in all seventeen Early Learning Goals.

  4. practical and exciting activities • In Hatchmere and within the school, we have a firm belief that children learn most effectively when they’re engaged and interested in the learning • Within Hatchmere, we have a daily phonics input, three numeracy inputs a week and a French input. During other time in class children are ‘getting busy’ where they direct their own learning through play and we observe and extended this through effective questioning. Children also take part in group activities during this time. • Over the first half term, we observed how children’s confidence grow within the setting, they are now very able to drive their own learning and access resources they need to extend their own learning

  5. Learning journeys • All reception settings are required to record children’s development through pictures, observations and examples of work, some settings record it online or within physical books • Within Hatchmere, each child has there own A3 learning journey, which we as practitioners make sure contains a range of evidence from all areas of development and demonstrates children’s progress throughout the year • Eventually all learning journeys will be sent home and you will be able to keep them as a record of your child’s time in Hatchmere • We value your contribution to your child’s learning journey, as so much learning takes place at home, so this year we have created an observation form for you to follow and email to Miss Hume.

  6. Phonics • To segment and blend words to read children ‘load the word onto their arms’ • During phonics lessons there is equal focus on children recognising the new sounds and writing the sounds- letter formation is a big part of our lessons • Daily phonics lessons where children spend time on the carpet as a whole class on the carpet and time working in smaller ability based groups • Each half term children are assessed on their phonics knowledge and their progress is tracked • Children will be provided with flash cards and letter formation sheets

  7. Support at home • A lot of children’s learning takes place at home and it be wonderful to tie that into their school work • Phonics ideas for home: letter hunts using flash cards, letter formation in sand, mud or paint, painting with cotton buds, weaving with ribbons/string in colanders, sharing books together and using the pictures/words to predict what might happen next • Maths ideas for home: counting or weighing using objects eg dried pasta, pebbles, cubes, lego etc, shape hunts around your house

  8. Library in School • To encourage children’s love of reading school are allowing children to rent books from our school library • Hatchmere children will be able to visit the library on a Tuesday afternoon and choose one book to take home to share with you • Please ensure these books are returned by the following Tuesday • This is a wonderful opportunity to encourage children’s love of reading and get them excited about books
