  14. Dynatest/CSIR HVS Original Concept • Actual road network in-service pavement construction variable • Laboratory pavements may not be representative of in-service pavements • Need to be able to test ‘real’ pavements • HVS needs to be mobile and self-contained for operation at remote sites

Dynatest/CSIR HVS Reliability and Durability • 3 Mk III’s built between 1974 and 1978 • 1978 to 1992 150 million repetitions or ~ 460 million ESAL’s • 1994 two Mk III’s refurbished and sold to Caltrans • Caltrans Mk III’s upgraded 2002 • Third Mk III semi - retired in 2004 • Currently back in service

Dynatest/CSIR HVS Productivity • HVS Mk III - Caltrans • 2 upgraded Mk III HVS’s produced 60 million repetitions (3 billion ESAL’s) in approx 9 years • av. 277778 reps/mo/HVS for 108 months • Now up to 72.5 million repetitions • Approx. 4+ billion ESAL’s (n = 4.2) • 111 different pavement sections tested

HVS Mk VI Design • Reduce cost and make system upgradable to exceed Mk IV+ capabilities with low risk • Eliminate vehicle frame • Reduce complexity • Use turntable trailer axles to move laterally • On site mobility – use tractor or forklift • Long haul mobility – as for Mk IV or better • Load, speed, test section as for Mk IV or V • Single and dual wheels • Externally powered – line power or genset
