  3. Vascoda will go online in August 2003 • Central access point for all fields of science • Allows interdisciplinary searches as well as complex navigation • Offers access to all types of documents

  4. The Idea behind Vascoda Vascoda: • facilitates access to quality information • will help users find information more quickly • offers access to all kind of materials important for research • offers one-stop-access-point to scientific information in germany

  5. History and Background 1996 the German research foundation (DFG) supports Virtual Libraries, 1999 the federal Ministry for education and research of germany, BMBF, supports the constitution of four information networks, the information alliance.

History and Background 2001 cooperation agreement between the german research foundation (DFG) and the federal ministry for education and research (BMBF) to centralize the sponsoring for virtual access to scientific information 2002 decision of the involved parties to build up one Portal to scientific information in germany, Vascoda

  7. At present there are three major ways • to access scientific • information: • the electronic journals library (EZB) • the Information alliance • 23 virtual libraries

  8. EZB - Electronic Journals Library • Offers an effective use of academic journals • Offers fast, structured and standardized access to scientific and academic full text journals • Contains 14,975 journal titles, among them 1,758 online-only journals, covering all subjects • 4,812 journals can be read free-of-charge • The participating libraries offer full text access to the journals they subscribe to

  9. The Information Alliance • Focusses on providing digital full-texts, published materials and grey literature • Combines the search results of databases with the electronic full-texts provided either by publishers, grey-literature- or preprint-servers etc.

The Information Alliance - Partners • EconDoc (Economics and Business) GBI Munich, HWWA Hamburg, ZBW Kiel, USB Cologne • GetInfo (Science and Technology) FIZ Karlsruhe, TIB Hannover • infoconnex(Pedagogy, Psychology, Social Sciences) DIPF Frankfurt, Informationszentrum Sozialwissenschaften Bonn, Zentrum für Psychologische Information und Dokumentation (ZPID) Trier etc. • Medpilot (Medical Science) DIMDI, ZBMed Cologne

  11. Virtual Libraries • Offer access to information and documents relevant for research in a specific field of study • Integrate searching and the delivery of documents - stored and scattered around the world • Cover electronic as well as printed material • Offer evaluated and commented internet sources of high quality

  12. Anglo-American Culture (SUB Göttingen) Contemporary Art (SLUB Dresden) Engineering (TIB/UB Hannover) Geo-Sciences (Göttingen) etc. Examples for Partners of Virtual Libraries

  13. The future: • Vascoda offering a search across • the electronic journals • the products of the information alliance, the databases • the subject guides of the virtual libraries

  14. Second release at Vascoda: Complex metasearch across the data of all participating partners dependent on xml-interface Some joined catalogue services might be offered
