  12. Human Interaction • Mining, food processing and the manufacture of industrial and transportation equipment are main industries relied on. • The country contains many valuable mineral resources including coal, iron ore, bauxite, copper, tin, and lead that provides the country with raw materials. • January 2011, the worst flooding for decade in Queensland. The flood cut off many cities and towns and left more than 30 people dead. The flood caused billions of dollars in damage to mines, farms and cities. Coal mining operations were severely damaged. 14. Adapting to Environment • Australians settle in the coastal areas and build houses according to their conditions. • In dry parts of Southern Australia, houses are solid stone offering warmth in winter and insulation from heat in the summer. • In Queensland a common house is the “Queenslander” a weather board house up high on stumps to catch the breeze.

  16. Regions • Generally classified into the geographic region of Oceania. • The region is the major area located between Asia and the Americas. • The island is named Oceania because the islands are linked by water unlike most other physical features. ( New Guinea, Indonesia, New Zealand and other smaller numerous islands) • The regions of the south and west are dry lands and deserts. The eastern shore is known for its coastal plain and beaches. In the north the region closest to the tropics, rainforests are wide spread.
