The Facts - E-Cigarettes have had a phenomenal rise over the past few years from very humble beginnings. • Currently estimates stand at around 3.5 million (Nice, ASH) UK citizens who use these products as either a way to give up their nicotine addiction or to supplement the addiction and offset the cost of a packet of fags. • UK regulation is set change in 2016 surrounding the regulation of these products – with set to classed as medicinal products drastically changing the they’re sold, produced and regulated. • As it stands anyone can buy an E-cigarette along with the battery and filters without need for ID or Proof of self – purchase. • The EU tobacco products directive was passed off in January 2014 setting up certain parameters around the sale of these nicotine products. Why this topic and why this story?
Continued • The tobacco lobby in Brussels doubled its spend between 2010 and 2013 to try and insert certain amendments into the directive to harm E-Cigarette manufacturers they don’t own, whilst attempting to get certain clauses and policy specifics removed to ensure their current products remain on the market. • As of 2016 all E-Cigarettes and battery operate nicotine delivery devices, will need to licensed as a medicinal product. • Currently only two E-cigarette products are going through the licensing process to allow them to say on shop shelves after 2016 – Both are owned by major tobacco companies. • Professor Robert West Audio Clip(s)

10th MAY – 25th May: Planning and preparation Additional Research, Approaching potential Interviewees Deciding on the direction of the story, forward planning of editing and production of the documentary, risk assessment, annoying the health department for an interview. 25th May - July 4th - Audio recording, interviews, sound effects creation. July 5th – July 18th - Production and editing process, contextual review of 5,ooo words Risk Assessment – No hazards foreseen – possible trip hazards, potential for equipment to be stolen if in London or Brussels or attacked by a crazy homeless Londoner pretending to be a statue.
