  12. Sight Preservation • 1917: Lions started in Chicago as a business club. • Melvin Jones thought business clubs should help their communities.

  13. 1925: Helen Keller gave us our charge.

  14. Lion’s Charge • Lions should become “knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness… , … and hasten the day when there shall be no preventable blindness, no little deaf, blind child untaught; no blind man or woman unaided.” • Now, blindness prevention anywhere in the world.

  15. Recent Vision Projects • 1990: Lions launched Sight First. $175 million to eliminate preventable blindness: • 739 projects in 88 countries • Prevented serious vision loss for 20 million • Built or expanded 200 clinics, wards, hospitals

  16. Recent Vision Projects • 2005: Campaign Sight First II • $200 million to continue the work. • $6 to prevent blindness in 1 person • Kid Sight • Used eye glasses campaign - half million pair in MI - Central America, Eastern Europe
