One evening when I was wading in the shallows of the lake to pass a rocky outcrop, I suddenly stopped dead as I saw the sinuous black body of a snake in the water. Simon was teaching a Christmas lesson and his students were doing a puzzle. One of the questions was very difficult and stumped the majority of them. When it was time to go over the answers, he prefaced that question with “time for the easy one!” He thought it was clever. The whole class starts laughing. Even the co-teacher is laughing, slapping her thighs laughing. They all then point to one girl in the class. Now, she isn’t the best student in the class. She’s the only one with makeup on, and she’s got circle lenses and a perm as well. All of the students point to her and say “she is the easy one!” Even the co-teacher called her the easy one. WTF?!?! Now, back when we were in school, we knew that there were some girls that were more floozy than others and got around a lot more, but never would a teacher laugh and call her the easy one. In one of them we had to lift the car off the scooter driver. While everyone stood around and gawked from the sidewalk, we ran to the convenience store, grabbed some water and tissues, and cleaned the blood off his face to see where he was bleeding. We had to stop other people from trying to get him to sit up. What if he broke his neck!? Don’t move his head until the ambulance comes! The ambulance came and we walked away, while everyone still stood and stared. Five days later we were eating dinner and watched a scooter T-Bone a taxi and flip over the taxi. Writing Lesson – using appropriate language • Stay away from jargon • Jargon – specialized language used for a specific activity, profession, or group • K-Drama jargon: Aegyo, Noona, Big Three (SM, JYP, YG), Hoobae, Fighting, Maknae, Omona • Use only when readers will be familiar with it, and only when plain English won’t work as well • Sentences filled with jargon can be hard to read • Which Korean words would probably be understood by almost an English speaker?
