  6. One evening when I was wading in the shallows of the lake to pass a rocky outcrop, I suddenly stopped dead as I saw the sinuous black body of a snake in the water. It was all of six feet long, and knew it to be a Storm’s water cobra – a deadly reptile for the bite of which there was, at that time, no serum. As I stared at in an incoming wave gently deposited part of its body on one of my feet. I remained motionless, not even breathing, until the wave rolled back into the lake, drawing the snake with it. Then I leaped out of the water as fast as I could, my heart hammering. • Jane Goodall, In the Shadow of Man

  9. Simon was teaching a Christmas lesson and his students were doing a puzzle. One of the questions was very difficult and stumped the majority of them. When it was time to go over the answers, he prefaced that question with “time for the easy one!” He thought it was clever. The whole class starts laughing. Even the co-teacher is laughing, slapping her thighs laughing. They all then point to one girl in the class. Now, she isn’t the best student in the class. She’s the only one with makeup on, and she’s got circle lenses and a perm as well. All of the students point to her and say “she is the easy one!” Even the co-teacher called her the easy one. WTF?!?! Now, back when we were in school, we knew that there were some girls that were more floozy than others and got around a lot more, but never would a teacher laugh and call her the easy one. So, when asked for a bit more clarification, the co-teacher said “That is her name. EeJi-Wuan!” http://www.eatyourkimchi.com/tldr-funny-stories-from-korea/

  10. In one of them we had to lift the car off the scooter driver. While everyone stood around and gawked from the sidewalk, we ran to the convenience store, grabbed some water and tissues, and cleaned the blood off his face to see where he was bleeding. We had to stop other people from trying to get him to sit up. What if he broke his neck!? Don’t move his head until the ambulance comes! The ambulance came and we walked away, while everyone still stood and stared. Five days later we were eating dinner and watched a scooter T-Bone a taxi and flip over the taxi. He was fine, somehow (must be the inner ninja in him) but the taxi’s window was shattered and passenger door crumpled. http://www.eatyourkimchi.com/crazy-driving-line-butting/

  11. Activity! • http://www.eatyourkimchi.com/soondubu-jigae/ • Using appropriate language for an international audience • How many times did Simon and Martina explain a Korean word or phrase in English? • What is one good example of how Simon and Martina explained a Korean custom? • In pairs, write a short narrative paragraph about Simon and Martina’s soondubuchige experience
