  3. 2020 Year 10 - Two courses of study • Year 10 Program • based on the Victorian Curriculum • leads to the VCE in Years 11 and 12 • Year 10 Applied Learning - ‘hands–on’ learning - vocationally (job) orientated - leads to the VCAL in Years 11 and 12

  4. Year 10 Program Core and elective subjects • build and extend Year 9 skills and knowledge • Opportunity to study VCE Unit 1/2 subjects • Opportunity to study Vocational Education and Training (VET) certificates

  5. Year 10 core subjects • Religious Education (3 periods p/wk) • English (5 periods p/wk) • Mathematics (5 periods p/wk) • Sport (2 periods p/wk) • Humanities (5 periods p/wk) for at least one semester • Science (5 periods p/wk) for at least one semester

  6. Religious Education • Common course for all Year 10 • Religious Education is compulsory for all Years 10, 11 and 12 students

  7. English pathways Three English pathways: - A pathway to VCE English - A pathway to VCE English Language - A pathway to VCE Literature

  8. English pathways Must choose one: - English - English and English Support - English Language and Literature Note: You can choose to study additional English studies as part of the elective offerings.

  9. Mathematics pathways Three pathways for different levels of mathematical ability: - To VCE Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics - To VCE General and Further Maths - To VCE General Maths (Foundation)

  10. Mathematics pathways Three Mathematics subjects offered : - Mathematical Methods - General Mathematics - Foundation Mathematics Note: You can choose to study additional Maths studies as part of the elective offerings.

  18. Science Compulsory study for one semester. • Choose from: - Biology - Physics - Chemistry - VCE Environmental Science - Science and Society Note: You are encouraged to study more than one Science

  19. Science • VCE Units 1-4 preparation: - Biology - Chemistry - Physics - Psychology - VCE 3/4 Environmental Science • Science and Society is a generalist program based on the Victorian Curriculum

  20. Electives • Choose three elective subjects per semester • Elective subject = 5 sessions per week • Two groups of electives: A - Arts/Eng/Human/HaPE/Lang/RE B - Computing/Maths/Science/Technology

  21. Electives – Year 10 Program Must do: • at least one semester of a Group A subject and • one semester of a Group B subject during the year.

  22. Electives – Year 10 Program (R) • Most electives are one semester long (R). You can only pick these electives once during the year. (S) • A few run for the whole year (S). You can do just one semester or study the subject for the whole year.

  23. Electives – Year 10 Program Whole year electives: - Music Performance - VCE Units 1/2 subjects - Vocational Education and Training (VET) certificates

  24. Electives – VET in Year 10 • Certificate II Building and Construction can only be partially completed • Pathways in Trade is a good way to explore the VET ‘learning mode’ before committing to this VET Building and Construction or Engineering.

  25. Electives – VET in Year 10 • Students studying a VET Certificate will typically not be permitted to study a VCE Unit 1/2 subject.

  26. Demand - Technology Subjects • If a large number of students select these subjects, a student may only be able to study one of these subjects in the year.

  27. Subject availability and clashes • It may not always be possible to give a student all his preferred elective choices. • Student numbers, staffing, timetabling and facilities will all impact on the subjects which will run in 2020.

  28. Year 10 Program Pathways • The Senior School is based on pathways model • Year 10 subjects introduce you to the skills and knowledge you will need when doing VCE Units 1/2 in Year 11.

  29. VCE Units 1/2 studies • VCE Units 1/2 build on these skills and knowledge and prepare you for VCE Units 3/4 in Year 12.

  30. VCE Units 1/2 studies • All Year 10 subjects have a direct pathway to their VCE Units 1-4 or VET equivalent subjects • Most students will achieve their best academic result by studying the Year 10 equivalent of any VCE/VET subject before undertaking VCE Units 1/2 and then VCE Units 3/4

  31. VCE Units 1/2 studies Few Year 9 students are ready to complete studies at the VCE Units 1/2 level!

  32. VCE Units 1/2 studies • Certain boys may benefit from studying VCE 1/2 subjects • Contact Mrs Petrov, Acting Deputy Headmaster – Teaching and Learning • Complete the Application to Study Other VCE Units 1/2 Subjects form

Choosing VCE Units 1/2 studies • You will need to: - complete Section 5 of the Guide - show a high level of academic success in relevant Year 9 subjects - display excellent work habits • Meet the Deputy Headmaster or Director of Senior School (as required) • Follow-up interview may be required for some

  34. Applied Learning • Designed for students whose preferred learning style is more ‘hands–on’.

  35. Applied Learning • Emphasis on project based learning • The aim of the Applied Learning Program is to give students the necessary skills to equip them well for employment, training at the TAFE level and to support students seeking an apprenticeship or traineeship.

  36. VCAL • The VCAL gives students literacy and numeracy skills, practical work-related experiences and an opportunity to build personal skills that are important for life and work.

  37. VCAL Three levels of the certificate: • Foundation • Intermediate and, • Senior The decision as to which level you will study at will be determined as part of the application process

  38. VCAL Students will complete studies in the following strands: • Literacy • Numeracy • Personal Development Skills • Work Related Skills and, • Industry Specific Skills (which might include a VET certificate, a SBA, or another recognised certificate).

  39. VCAL • Students will be required to complete individual and group projects as part of their VCAL program. • As for all other Year 10 students, boys participating in the VCAL program will be required to study Religious Education, Sport, a Mathematics and attend all Pastoral Care sessions.

  40. VCAL requirements • Must satisfactorily complete all outcomes in all strands • VCAL uses outcomes based assessment therefore, students must be able to show that they have met each outcome at least twice in order to qualify as ‘Competent’ in the particular outcome.

  41. VCAL requirements • VET, SBAT or certificates courses, are required to meet the Industry Specific Skills component of Intermediate and Senior VCAL • VCAL students do not sit formal written exams for assessment. Instead, school-based practical tasks are designed to enable the student to demonstrate competencies in ‘real-life’ situations.

  43. Applied Learning Program application process • You will need to: - complete Section 6 of the Guide - meet the eligibility criteria - complete the Applied Learning Questionnaire and, - Producing a portfolio of work to support your application • Meet Ms Lyn Maniz asap

  44. VET in schools – Vocational Education and Training • VET in schools programs allow you to combine nationally recognised training with the VCE • This improves access to a wider range of post-school pathways – apprenticeships, traineeships, TAFE or tertiary study • Each recognised VET in schools program has full status within the VCE Units 1-4 structure

  45. VET in schools – Vocational Education and Training • Three types of programmes: - VCE VET courses at St Patrick’s - Selected VCE VET courses through the Ballarat Schools Cluster - School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (which must be combined with the VCAL)

  46. Internal VET courses VCE VET courses at St Patrick’s: - Applied Languages (Japanese) - Building and Construction (partial) - Engineering Studies - Sport and Recreation - Employment Pathways

  47. Internal VET courses • Part of both the Year 10 Program and the Year 10 Applied Learning course • Typically, two-year programs • Some aspects may be completed ‘outside’ of normal class times

  48. Internal VET courses • You will need to: - complete Section 7 of the Guide - demonstrate an interest - show success in relevant Year 9 subjects - display high level of work habits • Meet with relevant VET teacher
