  1. The effects of the growth of tourism LO: to be able to explain the positive and negative impacts of tourism To categorize these impacts as economic, social and environmental

  2. Tourism: good or bad? • List 3 ways in which tourism can be seen as positive and 3 ways in which tourism can be seen as negative…..

  3. Postive Economic impacts

  4. Tourism and the multiplier effect in an LIC. Copy the diagram above, leaving space so that you can write in the blank boxes. Fill in the boxes so that they are in a logical order to show the multiplier effect of tourism in an LIC. Use terms from the following list to fill in the boxes: • Overseas visitors attracted. (HINT – top box) • Growth of construction industry, hotels and roads. • Extra food needed. • Local people have more money to spend on goods such as clothes. • Jobs created, e.g. waiters, guides, drivers. • Taxes on economic activities go to pay for roads, airports, hotels and restaurants. Label your diagram ‘Tourism and the multiplier effect in an LIC’.

  5. Key term: leakage When money from tourism is lost as it is sent back to the country that owns the hotel.

  6. Negative economic effects 1) Think of four world events (or events in the destination country) that might cause fewer tourists to visit, resulting in the multiplier effect breaking down. Try and think of actual examples of these events. 2) What issues arise from the fact that international tourism is controlled by very large companies?

  7. In what different ways is mass tourism likely to have significant socio-cultural impacts on the people of a destination country?

  8. Choose one of the following tourist destinations: • A coral reef and beach holiday • A safari holiday • A Mediterranean island with many night clubs • An archaeological site in the desert. Draw a spider-gram to show all the possible environmental impacts that tourists might have on your chosen destination.
