  1. Ladybugs or Ladybird Beetles By: Melissa Gregorio

  2. Where Ladybugs Hibernate and what it is called? • Ladybugs spend the winter in a type of hibernation called “diapause”. They fatten up for the winter by eating plenty of aphids and pollen. Then they hide in buildings, or under rocks, logs, tree bark or piles of leaves. Since the places the ladybug hides in are already made the ladybug just crawls under and doesn't have to do anything.

  3. Why do ladybugs hibernate? • The sleep of a true hibernator is kind of like death and is quite unlike ordinary sleep. While ladybugs are hibernating, all of it’s life activities nearly stop! The temperature of it’s body decreases until it is only left with air a little warmer than it’s den.

  4. How do Ladybugs go so long without food? • Ladybugs spend all fall accumulating significant fat stores before they can enter hibernation. When their body temperature gets colder and everything almost stops in its body the ladybug needs less energy, which is mobilized from the eternal fat stores.

  5. How Long Do Ladybugs Hibernate? • Ladybugs hibernate for about 2 or 3 months depending on the kind of ladybug. They hibernate this long so that they can gain back their strength from hibernating that long.

  6. Do Ladybugs Eat Or Store Food? What Kind Of Food? • Ladybugs eat aphids and tiny soft bodied insects that feed on plants. They find their food in Fall and store it. Then when they wake up they eat it to restore energy and nutrients.

  7. Ladybug Fun Facts • Ladybugs have 6 jointed legs and two pair of wings. Their three main body parts are; the head, the thorax and the abdomen. They have highly sensitive antennae also. Ladybugs are usually round and red with black spots but not all ladybugs have this color combination. • Ladybug varieties come in many different colors including yellow, orange, predominantly black, gray, pink and brown!
