Also note that no other potential committee members should be contacted without the prior approval of your chair. Faculty member has agreed to serve. You should present the primary research question and why the question is significant. The theoretical perspective of your research should be summarized. A general statement about the planned method should follow, and should include a description of the participants, instruments, research design, data collection, data analysis, and hypotheses, if relevant.

  3. Step 2 • Complete a Dissertation Proposal and have it approved by your chair. • The proposal is Chapters 1, 2, & 3 with front pages and references.

  4. Step 3 • Turn in a Resume for your Expert Practitioner to the program director

Approval of Committee by the Dean APPROVAL OF A DISSERTATION COMMITTEE From the Executive Order 991 (Sept. 22, 2006) Appointment of Dissertation Committee The student and advisor together shall propose the membership of the student’s dissertation committee. The proposed membership shall be forwarded to and determined by the campus official authorized to approve composition of the committee. The Ed.D. program director may allow the replacement of a committee member, based on the evaluation of a rationale provided by the student or committee member making the request. _________________________________________________________________________ From the CSUF Bylaws Appointment of Dissertation Committee 7.3.2.4.a The Research Support Seminar instructor will forward the proposed membership of the dissertation committee to the program director for Executive Committee for review. 7.3.2.4.b With Executive Committee support, the proposed committee membership will be transmitted to the Dean of the College of Education for approval and appointment of the members. 7.3.2.4.c Upon request by the student or the dissertation committee chair and upon the approval of the program director, the dissertation committee chair or member may be replaced. ______________________________________________________________________________ Student: Chair: CSU Second Reader: Expert Practitioner Reader: Approval by the Dean of the College of Education: __________________________________________ ___________ Signature Date Please return to Program Director when complete.

  6. Step 5—Committee Review • Send a copy of your Dissertation Proposal to the committee members at least 3 weeks prior to the defense so you can make any last minute changes necessary.

  7. 6. Set date for defense ESTABLISHING A DISSERTATION ORAL DEFENSE DATE The student prepares this form and provides it to the committee chair for approvals. This form must be provided along with a copy of the proposed dissertation to the program director at least 3 week prior to the defense date. The chair affirms that: (a) the copies were provided to the committee members at least three weeks before the defense, (b) each member of the committee has been consulted, and (c) supports the scheduling of the dissertation defense.   8. Step 7—PowerPoint • Develop a PowerPoint • The presentation should be no longer than 30 minutes • The maximum number of slides should not exceed 20-30 slides • Must be approved by your chair

  9. Step 8--Practice • Rehearse the presentation • Plan for types of questions • Review with your chair

Step 9—Proposal Defense Form RESULTS OF DISSRTATION DEFENSE Student: Date of Defense: Title of Dissertation: The committee has reached a unanimous decision: Approval and recommend conferral of the degree Approval with minor modification that can be reviewed by the chair Approval with substantive modifications that require review by the full committee. The final vote of the committee will be postponed until the changes are completed. The chair provides a memorandum outline the necessary revisions within a month. Lack of approval. The chair provides a memorandum outlining the bases for the decision within a month. Defense of a significantly revised dissertation must take place within one year. Unless the second dissertation is approved or approved with minor modifications the student will be removed from the program.
