About WSE • The Watson School of Education was rated “EXEMPLARY” by the State Board of Education in December, 2002. • We are one of 7 state institutions to be rated at this highest level. • WSE is the 3rd largest producers of teachers out of 48 institutions in North Carolina • Small classes- average 25 students per class.

  3. The Watson School of Education had a 98% passing rate for the Praxis II. This is a test that students must pass at the end of their college program that is required before they can be a certified teacher. All of our upper level education courses have a field-based component to let students gain the most hands-on experiences possible. Students will be working with children in schools and with kids in our Education lab- tutoring, after-school help.

Certification Areas • Majors (BA in Education) • Education of Young Children (Birth-K) • Elementary Education (K-6) • Middle Grades Education (6-9) • You will be certified in two of the following areas: Language Arts Mathematics Science Social Studies • Special Education (K-12) • You will be certified in either: • General Curriculum • Adapted Curriculum

Biology Chemistry English Geology Social Studies Mathematics Physics Science Licensure for teaching 9-12 is offered in: Students who get certification for 9-12 grades receive their degree from the department in which they are being certified. For example if you will teach English, you will have a BA in English.

  6. Licensure for teaching K-12 is offered in: • French • Music • Spanish • Physical Education Students who get certification for K-12 grades receive their degree from the department in which they are being certified. For example if you will teach Music, you will have a BA in Music.

  7. Academic Concentrations • All students majoring in elementary, middle grades, and Physical Education must select an Academic Concentration • A minimum of 24 semester hours is required • Transfer hours will count towards concentrations • An Academic Concentration IS NOT a second major or an automatic minor

Admission Requirements for WSE • Complete English (103 or 101/201), mathematics and a science class with a lab with a grade of "C" or better in each course. • Complete EDN 200, Teacher, School, and Society, and EDNL 200 Lab with a grade of "C" or better. • Complete a minimum of 45 semester hours with a cumulative grade point average of 2.7 or better (4.0 scale) on all work attempted at UNCW. Transfer students must earn a 2.7 GPA on a minimum of 12 hours completed at UNCW • Pass Praxis I tests: PPST Reading = 176 PPST Writing = 173 PPST Mathematics = 173 SAT or ACT Exemptions: SAT higher than 1100- exempt from all Praxis I 550 or higher in individual area- exempt from that individual subject ACT 24 total- exempt from all Praxis I, 24 in individual area exempt from that individual subject

Courses to take at community colleges In addition to any Basic Studies classes that students take to transfer to UNCW or complete their associate degrees- they can also consider the following courses (if offered): Community CollegeUNCW EDU 216 EDN 200 & EDNL 200 EDU 163 EDN 203 OR PSY 263 PSY 216 PSY 241 PSY 223 MAT 141 MAT 141 MAT 142 (for Elem. Majors- 2 maths) MAT 142 Courses for their Academic Concentration

Tips and Information • Students are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to take the Praxis I as soon as possible- (more info on Hot Orange Handout) • Math requirements: students in Elementary and Middle Grades Math Certification need to take 2 MATH courses- computer science is not considered a math course within the School of Education • Everyone else is OK with just one math course. • Recommend MAT 141 (and MAT 142 if needing a 2nd math)

  11. Tips and Information • Students must have a 2.700 cumulative UNCW GPA in order to be admitted into the WSE- their GPA starts over when they enter UNCW. We do not take into account their previous GPA’s. • Students are not able to go straight into the WSE, they must take at least 12 hours at UNCW before being eligible to be admitted • I will take the BEST 64 hours into our degree programs for students who have taken more than 64 hours at their previous institution.
