What is text evidence? Details from the text that a reader can use to support his or her ideas and opinions about the text.
What is annotating the text? An annotation is a question or comment that you write directly on a text to capture your reaction to what you are reading. Avid Marking the Text Sheet
To cite text evidence you need to: • Read the text closely. • Identify what the text says explicitly. • Find the most relevant textual evidence that supports your analysis. • Cite specific words, phrases, or sentences. What is text evidence? Details from the text that a reader can use to support his or her ideas and opinions about the text.
Let’s try it together: Why does she wish she were older? Use text evidence from this passage to answer the question.
Important terms: Explicit: evidence directly stated in the text Implicit: suggested in the text but not directly stated Make Inferences: using clues from the text to make a logical decision
Your turn: • If I say, “Wow, your lunch looks really good. I haven’t eaten in a while.” You might be able to imply that….. • Look at the example to the left. If I ask, “Are we going to the beach tomorrow?” How can you explicitly answer that question.
