Anthem, specifically, is a form of Anglican church music. • Generally, a song of celebration usually acting as a symbol for a distinct group of people
How to build an anthem • Early anthems were simple (both lyrically and musically). • Why? • So the words and music could be understood and clearly heard. • What would happen if anthems were complicated?
Examples • Can you think of any examples of anthems? • National anthems • Religious songs • Pop songs- sport anthems
So anthems are all simple right? • We know that anthems are simple in construction. What does that do for the meaning? • Are anthems simple in every way?

The meaning of anthems… • Anthems mean a lot more than their simple constructions show. • Anthems are memorable (and come along so rarely) because… they convey deep, complex emotional meaning in a way that can reach the masses
