  1. Australian Rare Coins: What You Need to Know ? Australian carries anumber of unique rare coins that have held their value. The most valuable coins in Australia are each different, unique and tell their own historic story. Their rarity ranges but those coins that have best maintained their original condition are the ones that are worth the highest in value. The first currency minted in Australia was the Holey Dollar and the most valuable coin we hold is the 1930 Penny. The Australian rare coin industry has seen many changes over the years but as we approach a more digital paying era, these coins will only be worth a higher value in the near future. Here is our guide to the most valuable, Australian coins and a brief history on how they came to be the currency they were.

  2. Most valuable coins in Australia today! 1855 Sydney Mint Sovereign Kookaburra Square Penny 1930 Penny 1923 Halfpenny Holey Dollar Adelaide Pound

  3. 1930 Penny The 1930 Penny is a part of Australian heritage. The coin is a national icon and due to its star status, this is one of Australia’s most valuable coins. There are theories that have been put forward to the accidental minting of the 1930 Penny. This Penny was brought to fame during the Depression and the lack of economic growth in 1930 with the Melbourne Mint confirming that apart from the six 1930 Pennies created to prove quality, no pennies were struck for circulation in that year. The suspected mintage is about 1500 coins making this coin historic and unique.

  4. 1855 Sydney Mint Sovereign Australia's first sovereign struck at the nation's first official mint, the 1855 Sydney Mint Sovereign is one of the most revered coins in Australian numismatics. The Sydney Mint was launched in response to the discovery of gold, and this highly sought-after coin was last seen four years ago in 2017, when it sold at an auction for a large amount of money. The lustrous surfaces make up only a small part of these rare pieces and each coin has an impeccable design.

  5. Kookaburra Square Penny The Kookaburra Square Penny was created to feature a typically Australian design featuring the nation's native bird, the kookaburra. To maximise its impact, a new shape was planned with the move from circular to square. The bronze was later discarded and replaced with cupro-nickel. Today, there are around 200 kookaburra coins held by private collectors, making it a very rare coin. These pennies do not have the same design. The Melbourne Mint tested thirteen different styles introducing enormous interest, personal choice and procurement challenges into the collection.

  6. Adelaide Pound The Adelaide Pound is the nation’s first gold coin. It was struck at the South Australian Government Assay Office, Adelaide, with gold which was brought from the Victorian gold fields. The coin is a classic piece of Australiana and its appeal is timeless. There are two options of the 1852 Adelaide Pound including: Adelaide Pound Type I: minted in the very first production run of Adelaide Pounds. Adelaide Pound Type II: produced in the second production run of coins.

  7. Holey Dollar The Holey Dollar is one of the most influential coin in the Australian rare coin market and was the nation’s first dollar, struck in 1813. It was created from a coin of the Spanish Empire meaning that its influence extends to international markets. What’s unique about the Holey Dollar, is that no two coins are the same. Each coin is different, meaning they are each special in their own way. The Holey Dollar was sold in 2020 by Coinworks for A$95,000.

  8. 1923 Halfpenny The most iconic coin in Australia is the 1923 halfpenny, with its glossy, smooth surfaces, full central diamond, six crisp pearls and the appearance of the seventh and eighth pearls. The 1923 Halfpenny was struck at the Melbourne Mint on King George V’s reign. It's also one of Coinworks rarest coins - listed for A$95,000! With only 15,000 minted, it’s confirmed that this coin is Australia’s rarest circulating halfpenny.
