English Language Development Program • Targets instruction to each child’s English language proficiency level • Follows a developmental scope and sequence of language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) • Includes specific instruction in the syntactical and grammatical aspects of language • Includes ongoing assessment of students’ progress in English proficiency • Is taught by appropriately authorized teachers (CLAD or equivalent) ELD – February 8, 2011

ELD Practices • Provide ELD to all English Learners (including those at the advanced levels and in mainstream classrooms) • Group together students of similar proficiency levels and provide them differentiated ELD instruction • Assess students’ progress in English proficiency on an ongoing basis • Align ELD instruction to specific standards and expected outcomes • Ensure that appropriately credentialed teachers are providing core including ELD ELD – February 8, 2011
