AGRICULTURE IN INDONESIA • Agriculture : food crops, horticulture, estate crops, livestock • Horticulture crops : Vegetables, fruits, ornamental plants and medicinal plants • Vegetables : potato, shallot, chilli, tomatoes, string bean, bean, cucumber, kangkong, carrot, cabbage, chinese cabbage, etc. • Fruits : mango, mangosteen, durian, orange, banana, papaya, starfruits, etc.

  3. Agriculture land > 30 million ha : - Fruits : 727.196 ha - Vegetables : 995.707 ha - Paddy : 12.327.425 ha - Maize : 4.001.727 ha - Estate crops : 15.345.000 ha Population around : 230 million people AGRICULTURE IN INDONESIA

  4. Background • Potato demand has been increasing since the fast food restaurant developed well • Seed potato availability is becoming very important to fulfill the need potato growers

Potato in Indonesia Planting area : 64 151 ha/year Productivity : 16,70 ton/ha Production : 1.071.543 ton/year Consumption/capute/year : 4,2 kg Potato mostly grown on mountainous area/hilly (>1.000 m above sea level, temperature 15-20 degree Celcius) Three Types of Potatoes : For vegetable : var. Granola (self sufficiency) For Chips : var. Atlantic (a part is still imported) For French fries : Mc russet, Russet burbank (all imported)

GOVERNMENT EFFORTS TO INCREASE THE USED OF QUALITY SEED To Improve farmer’s knowledge and skill to produce seed for their own farms To keep Breeder seed & Foundation seed available continously for seed growers To promote promising varieties released by the Minister of Agriculture, by conducting demonstration plot at Government Seed Farms or farmer’s fields

  8. Trend of Potato Production in Indonesia Between 1969 and1995, potato production grew by an average of 13 percent per year; and by the mid 1990s, total annual production exceeded 1 million tons. Most of the production growth resulted primarily from the expansion of planting areas and, to a lesser extent, from yield improvement (Adiyoga, 1999, Ahmad Dimyati ).
