Who is required to test? • All students in grades two through eleven are required to take the: • California Standards Tests (CSTs) • California Modified Assessment (CMA) Or • California Alternate Performance Assessment (CAPA) Additionally • All Spanish-speaking, English learners enrolled in U.S. public schools less than 12 months must take the STS in addition to taking the CSTs (Grade Level & Algebra if applicable)
Test Parts • Multiple-Choice • Multiple sections of each subject (pt. 1 & pt. 2) • Parts administered consecutively for each subject • Students MAY NOT go back to review or revise any part of the exam once the test administration is complete for that section. Example: (Part 1 of the English CST administration is complete. A student just finished part 2 of the English CST. The student CAN ONLY review or revise part 2 of the English CST.)
Test Examiners • Distribute test materials to correct students • Answer Documents • Be cautious with similarly named students – Check date of birth • Make sure students code correct EOC math or science test taken • Make sure students code correct test version number • Majority are pre-identified with barcode. Section 1 on answer document to be completed by student; ALL OTHER DEMOGRAPHIC INFO in barcode. • TEST BOOKLETS – Have students write first & last name (no nicknames) on the test booklet. If version number or CST subject is omitted on answer document may have to review test booklets. • No subject, no version number = NO SCORE
Test Security • Examiners/Proctors • Examiners, observers and proctors must be trained annually prior to test administration and signed test security affidavits stating that test specific training was received must be submitted to the district testing coordinator prior to release of site test materials. • CAPA Examiners and Observers must be certificated • Site trainings shall have a sign-in roster of attendees to verify date of training. • Anyone Having Access • Persons directly involved in the testing process shall have a signed STAR Security Affidavit on file prior to having access to test materials. A copy of signed affidavits must be submitted to the District Test Coordinator prior to receipt of test materials.
Test Security continued • Test materials are to be stored in a central locked storage area/cabinet. • Partiesnot directly involved with testing should have access to test materials. • Materials are not to be reviewed, copied or discussed by anyone. • Security stressed as district could be monetarily liable if breached or results jeopardized. • Security Audits will be conducted by CDE (Districts are randomly selected)
Security Audits • At randomly-selected schools and district offices • Before, during, or after testing • Are materials secure, accounted for, and when not in use locked-up • Are correct administrative procedures being followed: • Materials have been removed or covered • Students are not being coached through the exams • Only appropriate accommodations and or modifications are being provided, et. al.
Before Testing • Posters/signs that may aid a student with the exams should be covered or taken down in rooms used for test administration. • Inventory all materials and ensure items are secured. • Have students clear everything from their desks. No food or drink allowed on student’s desk during testing. • Ensure correct end of course math and/or science booklets go to right student • Examiners should read DFAs and read “Say Boxes” exactly as written (reminder- majority of answer documents are pre-id’d –box 1 to be completed by student with signature on answer document)
ExaminersCANNOT: • Review test questions before, during, or after testing • Check students’ answers including (among others): • Advise students of wrong answer or to check an answer; or • Withhold answer docs until students demonstrate they have the right answers
Examinersshall monitor students during testing to make sure students are – • On correct part • Do not go on to other parts or back to a previously completed part • Do not skip a question on their answer document (so that they are off by one or more).
Read and sign affidavits • MAKE SURE CORRECT TESTS ARE GIVEN • CST and/or CMA • STS • Correct math test for grade 7 if Algebra • Correct EOC for grades 8−11 • CAPA • Students who are not testing may not stay in the classroom where a test is being administered • If students need to be taken to another room to finish testing, BE SURE THEY ARE ESCORTED BY AN ADULT. Do not allow students to walk to another room with test materials by themselves.
Examiners shall ensure there is enough time to complete a part before beginning the part
During Multiple-Choice Testing • Use Directions for Administration (DFAs) correctly • Read ALL “SAY” boxes exactly as written • ONLY Translate boxes with “T” (NO CST/CMA/STS questions, • prompts, or passages may be translated) • Grades 9−11 in single DFA for each test: CST, CMA, STS
During Multiple-Choice Testing • Give correct test booklets and answer documents to students whose names are on answer documents • Give breaks only at end of a part as indicated by stop sign • Answer documents • Mark Correct Test and Version Number • District STAR Coordinator must contact the STAR Program Office if testing irregularities occur
During Test Administration • Walk around the room and actively monitor students • Verify student has written their name on their test booklet and answer document • Verify student marking in correct section • Verify version number and subject correctly marked on answer document • Scratch paper may be used for STAR test • No calculators except if specified in their IEP or 504 plan • No cell phones and/or music devices during the test • If you see an irregularity or cheating, contact the school test coordinator immediately • If students have completed their test AND their test materials have been collected they may be allowed to read literature not related to test subject taken.
After completion of test • Check List - Before document return • Make sure student wrote their name on test booklet and answer document • Ensure that students have marked the correct Science and/or Math test taken, version and serial number on their answer document or the student will not receive a score. • Verify all materials have been collected • Count all materials to verify return of what was issued to you • Alphabetize answer documents
Who Takes the CMA? • Students: • Have an IEP • Meet the SBE-adopted eligibility criteria • Enrolled in grades 3–11 • May take the CMA for some subjects, CST for other subjects • Must take grade-level CSTs when a CMA is not offered • May have previously taken the CMA, regardless of score • Not eligible to take the CAPA • IEP specifies the CMA, subject(s), and variations and/or accommodations • No additional modifications are allowed • Examiners should check the student’s IEPs to see whether and which CMA test the student should take
CMA Tests for 2012 CMA for ELA in grades 3–11 CMA for Writing in grades 4 and 7 CMA for Mathematics in grades 3–7 CMA for Algebra I (EOC for grades 7–11) CMA for Geometry (EOC for grades 8–11) Note: If CMA students in grades 8 or 9 are NOT taking Algebra I or Geometry, the IEP should designate the math test accordingly. There is no CMA General Math. CMA for Science in grades 5 and 8 CMA for Life Science in grade 10
CMA Materials for 2012Grades 8−11 • If Pre-ID’d: • For grades 8–11 if at least one CMA test is pre-identified for a student, the student will receive both the CMA and the CST pre-identified answer documents • If NOT Pre-ID’d: • Answer documents sent based on test booklets ordered
No audio CDs • No modifications for students taking CMA • Additional CMA tests • CMA for English–Language Arts (ELA) in grade 9, 10 & 11 • CMA for Life Science in grade 10 • CMA for Algebra I in grades 7–11 • Changes to answer documents or test booklets • Separate CMA answer documents for grades 8–11 • Students taking one or more CMA tests will need to return a CMA AND a CST answer document • Sections 8 and 9, “Ethnicity/Race • Version numbers on second and third pages • Section 7c, “Assessed with CMA” • For grades 8–11, staff must complete Section 7c on the CST for each of the CMA tests taken
