  1. Sacraments By Sarah Donaghey

  2. Sacraments • The seven sacraments are a very important part of our Catholic faith. • We believe Jesus himself gave us each of the sacraments and each one flows from his life and ministry. Through each sacrament we are given the grace of God and drawn closer to him. Each sacrament is a visible sign of God’s unconditional love for us. A sacrament can be a visible sign where God comes to us, enters into our life and brings us closer to him through his grace. • The seven sacraments can be broken down into the Sacraments of Initiation, Sacraments of Healing, and Sacraments of Christian Vocation.

  3. Baptism • Baptism: • A religious sacrament marked by the symbolic application of water to the head or immersion of the body into water and resulting in admission of the recipient into the community of Christians. • Symbols: 1. Cross - To show that there will be some evil in our lives. 2. White Garment - The white garment is a symbol of purity as well as a manifestation of the "new man." White symbolizes that the stain of Original Sin is no longer upon the child whose soul is wiped clean by the sacrament of baptism. The infant is now a child of God and that heaven is opened to him/her. 3. Oil Of Chrism - Symbolizes the seal of the Holy Spirit. 4. Water - Water reminds us that it is God who gives us life. Symbolizes cleansing and purity. Water also washes away our sins. 5. Candle - The final symbol in baptism is the giving of a lighted candle. Light, like water, is essential for life. Without light there could be no life on this planet. It particularly symbolizes faith.

  5. Confirmation • Confirmation: • (in the Christian Church) The rite at which a baptized person affirms Christian belief and is admitted as a full member of the church. • A dove is the main symbol. But a flame may also be a symbol because on Pentecost the Holy Spirit came to the diciples as tongues of flames above their heads. The laying on of hands, wind, candle and Sacred Chrism all represent the Holy Spirit, whom we receive in Confirmation.  • Symbols: • a dove (the holy spirit) 2. fire 3. Sacred Chrism (oil) 4. holy water

  7. Eucharist • Eucharist: • The Christian ceremony commemorating the Last Supper, in which bread and wine are consecrated and consumed. • Symbols

  8. Marriage • Marriage: • The formal union of a man and a woman, typically recognized by law, by which they become husband and wife
