    8. What's new in SQL 2012 ? En un peu plus détaillé : Voilà les grandes nouveautés « phares », mais aussi les grandes améliorations dans chacun des grands domaines. Distributed Replay provides a solution against Oracle Rapid Application Testing (RAT). Let’s take a look at Distributed Replay. Why is this important? Customers need a way to apply real-world application loads to their applications within their test environments. Previously customers could use SQL Server Profiler which only allowed simulating workload from a single computer which made it difficult for customers to really test large-scale workload simulation in the test environment. Customers can use Distributed Replay for application compatibility testing, performance testing and capacity planning for their mission critical applications. Benefits: As a result, customers can improve testing processes to really simplify deployments and help minimize errors or issues in production. Distributed Replay offers tools to give customers insights into troubleshooting and debugging during this testing and integration with SQL Server Upgrade Assistant can help customers assess the impact of future SQL Server upgrades. OPTIONAL TECHNICAL OVERVIEW OF HERO FEATURES: Slides 28-33 There are LOTS of new features in this release but if I were to isolate I would talk about my top 4: SQL Server AlwaysOn is a new integrated high availability and disaster recovery solution including 8x faster throughput and 2x faster failover. The ColumnStore Index (f.k.a Apollo), SQL Server 2012 which achieves 10-100x* performance gains. (This is based on Microsoft data and data procured from customers participating in the Microsoft SQL Server 2012 TAP.) The SQL Server Data Tools, which streamline application development with a single environment for developing DB, BI, and web solutions across on-premise and cloud environments. Highly visual and powerful tools that put BI into the hands of end-users, such as PowerPivot and Power View, which enables the creation of stunning interactive data visualizations. More details SQL Server 2012 brings a number of Tier 1 enhancements for high availability, scalability and performance. 16. 20. ColumnStore Index: Boost query performance by up to 10x MORE VALUE TO END USERS Sub-second query response Faster time to business insight REDUCE COSTS Greater performance on less hardware Easy to manage, built into SQL Server, most solutions externally managed at additional cost HOW IT WORKS Read-only workloads, Data Warehousing Builds a new view on top of the existing tables Fetches only those columns needed Performance increased varies to 100x for some customers depending on their environment Oracle Compete ColumnStore Index competes with Oracle’s Times 10 which is a hybrid compression solution, not a true column store. This is sold as an add-on option and you have to buy Exadata, this is not included in 11g. The performance is a result of the compression. ColumnStore Index in SQL Server, is flexible, you can decide to enable a clustered index, take off a clustered index – you can enable it where you need it. Let’s take a closer look at the performance improvements in SQL Server 2012   As I mentioned previously, ColumnStore Index introduces a up to 10x query improvements for data warehousing queries. If you are familiar with PowerPivot that we delivered in 2008 R2, one of the major technical advances was the ability to compress and then scan very large amounts of data in a very small space. We made that possible with a technology called VertiPaq. The new investments in SQL Server 2012 bring together the VertiPaq technology that was developed in Analysis Services and a new query execution paradigm called batch processing to deliver ColumnStore Index that provides truly astonishing gains for common data warehouse queries. This can lead to reduced costs via reduced time waiting for complicated queries to perform, the reduced need to build external OLAP systems and because it’s built directly into the engine, customers don’t have to manage an external column store database. So what is a ColumnStore Index? An index on top of an existing row-level table which provides a view of the data which puts the index on specific columns. Based on this it translates the data based on those required columns then just stores this view to create the dramatic performance gains. It’s very dependent on the data and the nature of the query which can provide incredible gains – some customers have seen 100x.   Oracle Compete ColumnStore Index competes with Oracle’s Times 10 which is a hybrid compression solution, not a true column store. 22. PowerView : Stunning, Interactive Data Visualization Discover and share insights across all levels of the organization with Power View Interactive, browser-based visualization tool for gathering insights at the speed of thought Immersive, visual design experience Rich meta data-driven interactivity Presentation-ready at all times Discover new insights at the speed of thought with Power View Oracle & Cognos Compete Big BI with end to end, lots of IT oversight and management. Lacking in easy to use, self-service BI tools that really enable that broad BI adoption with the IT oversight. Alternatively, Tableau and QlikTech offer the dazzling visualizations just like Power View but lack the enterprise-ready BI on the back end to be managed and scaled from IT. What is Power View Power View is an interactive data exploration and visual presentation experience targeted at Information Workers who need access to their business data but don’t have the technical knowledge to write their own queries or specialized knowledge around reporting.  Built on top of the BI Semantic Model, which provides a user friendly view of the data, Power View gives the user a powerful yet simple to use experience for telling stories with their data.   Power View provides the following:   Highly Visual Design Experience Interactive, web-based authoring and sharing of information Familiar Microsoft Office design experience Powerful data layout with banding, callout and small multiples visualizations   Rich metadata driven ineractivity Fully integrated with PowerPivot and BISM Drive greater insight through smart and powerful querying Zero configuration highlighting and filtering Animated trending and comparisons   Presentation-ready at all times Turn pervasive information into persuasive information through ease of sharing and collaboration in SharePoint PowerPoint integration for interactive data views in your presentations Discover new insights at the speed of thought with Power View Oracle & Cognos Compete Big BI with end to end, lots of IT oversight and management.
