My Way A self directed supports and services project
Background • International trends show people have better outcomes when they are in control of their lives. • My Way is the next stage in the Commission’s journey towards more individualised, flexible services.
Background • My Way responds to what people with disability have been telling us and the Count Me In strategy. • Self-directed services were also recommended by the State Government’s Economic Audit Committee Report (2009).
Background • More than 1,000 people have been consulted on the My Way project, with feedback and knowledge drawn from people with disability, families, carers and disability organisations. • My Way is a partnership with the non-government sector to improve the lives of people with disability.
What is it about? • Choice and control in the hands of people with disability, family and carers. • Partnership with the sector. • Individualised, person-centred support. • Connection with community and generic services. • Seamless, holistic funding. • Decentralised decision-making.
What it’s not about • Not having choice—participation is voluntary. • Having to take control and responsibility for everything. • All about funding.
How will it work? Eligibility and information • My Way Coordinators (goverment and non-government) • information/exploration/possibilities/eligibility • Choice.
How will it work? Planning • planning framework—principles, templates review • Community-based • community connection/strategic partnerships • people with disability in control (with support as required) • a flexible, individualised plan.
How will it work? Ongoing support • More choice: • coordination • technical support • futures planning • information • Advocacy.
How will it work? Funding • Small, flexible one-off grants. • Funding packages that reflect current needs and are regularly reviewed. • Local decision-making. • Opportunity to repackage existing funding.
What’s different? • My Way Coordinators (government and non-government). • Increased choice and control for people with disability, their families and carers. • Stronger community connection/generic services. • Stronger partnerships with the disability sector.
What’s different? • increased focus on planning—person with disability at the centre • supports and services mirrored in goverment and non-government sector • funding—seamless, local decision-making, responsive/regular reviews.
