  2. And a Partridge in a Pear Treep. 150 • What does Junior mean: It was a beautiful and ugly thing? • Why is it ugly? • Why is it beautiful? • What could this “gift” also represent? • How does hyperboble support Junior’s feelings?

  3. Red vs. white • Grandmother is killed. • Mary’s book is about“Her book is about hope.” • Tolerance p. 155: simile about gays? • Gay people could do anything. They were like Swiss Army knives.

Wake p.161 • Why does Junior call Ted a thief? • What does Ted represent to Junior? • The benevolent attitude that some whites hold toward Native-American is seen as patronizing. • What is ironic about the kind of “art” that Ted collects? (163) • Ted needs an anthropologist to determine the origin of the dress. It is as though the Native-Americans are not real people, but some exotic speices to be studied. • Even the title is ironic (wake-up)

  5. Pain and Grief • At the end of this chapter how do the people gathered at his grandmother’s funeral respond? • Earlier in the novel Junior writes about the different ways people deal with their pain: • Penelope • Arnold’s dad • Rowdy • Mary • Junior?

  6. Valentine • Allusion: • Reference to a well known character in another book, or a reference to movie, play, poem, any piece of literature.

  7. Medea • A character from Greek mythology who helped Jason get the golden fleece. • Would you like to hear a song? • What did she lose? • Homeland • Jason • Reputation • children

  8. Read Valentine out loud √= something significant In journal write down one significant passage and explain why you chose it. Share with class

  9. “It all gave me hope. It gave me a little bit of joy.” • What gives Junior hope in this chapter? • Back in Rowdy sings the Blues he compared hope to Pegasus: • Mythical creature- Pegasus, winged white horse-son of Poisedon; carried Zeus’s lighting bolts. • Later he asks parents who has the most hope, and they said whites.

  10. What gives you hope? • Write a list poem using similes or metaphors: -Hope is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul. (Emily Dickenson) -Hope is Jimi Hendrix singing the national anthem. -Hope is like the chocolate bar in my Halloween bag
