  8. Social Structure during the Middle Ages • The social structure of the middle ages was known as the feudal system. In this system the monarchs granted pieces of land to nobles in return for military support. Peasants lived on the land and worked for the nobles. Peasants were required to give a portion of the crops to the nobles. The system was hierarchical, as seen by the model.

  9. Structure of the Catholic Church • Within the feudal system the church had their own structure Pope Archbishops Bishops Priests Parishioners (peasants)

  10. Catholic Church • The Catholic Church was very powerful and influential during the middle ages. The church became very wealthy as members were required to pay tithe, which was a portion of their crops or earnings. This wealth caused many of the priests and bishops to become corrupt and more interested in living a luxurious lifestyle than promoting a spiritual life. This caused many people to begin questioning the churches authority.

  13. Peasants Revolt of 1381 After the Black Death, there was a shortage of peasants to work the land of the nobles, this caused wages to rise. The monarch and nobles decided to create a law that would also force peasants to be paid wages the amount prior to the Black Death and still follow certain serf obligations. Lower wages along with high taxes to support the Hundred Year’s War, many peasants became upset and decided to rise up against the nobles and monarchs. The peasant’s Revolt and the Black Death were two significant factors in the demise of the feudal system. http://www.collaborativelearning.org/peasantsrevolt.pdf

  14. Hundred Year’s War • Hundred Years' War has been used by historians since the beginning of the nineteenth century to describe the long conflict that pitted the kings and kingdoms of France and England against each other from 1337 to 1453. These battles caused many serfs and peasants to rise up against the feudal system.
