This study compares the effects of communication medium (online vs. face-to-face) on critical thinking levels in terms of triggering exploration, integration, resolution, and other discussions. Results indicate significant differences in triggering response, exploration, and use of other mediums. Findings suggest that face-to-face discussion, abstract analysis, and group consensus enhance critical thinking. Future studies could explore visual vs. kinesthetic learning styles, teaching styles, course material, and time lapse in online course responses.

DISCUSSION • MEDIUM- ONLINE VS. FACE-TO-FACE • REPORT- INDIVIDUAL SUMMARY VS. GROUP CONSENSUS SUMMARY • ANALYSIS- SPECIFIC CONCEPTS VS. BROAD CONCEPTS
Dependent Variables Triggering, messages that evoke thinking about issues, that evoke a response; Exploration, messages that relate and connect with one another but are not supported; Integration, messages that build on previous messages and are supported;
Dependent Variables-Cont. • Resolution, messages that develop a hypothesis and suggest ways to test and defend the hypothesis; • Other- messages that are social in character, such as “Did you watch the game last night?”
FINDINGS • Face –to-Face Discussion, Abstract Analysis, and Group Consensus increased levels of Critical Thinking • An Increase In Discussion Generates More Critical Thinking
Suggestions For Further Studies • Learning Styles- Visual Vs. Kinesthetic • Teaching Styles • Course Material • Time Lapse In Online Course Responses
